[How-To] Jailbreak ANY iDevice running 3.1.2!

Geohot has released his jailbreak program, called “blackra1n“. This small Windows-only program lets one jailbreak their iDevice (iPod Touch or iPhone) running 3.1.2, which is Apple’s latest version of the iPhone operating system. This is the only jailbreak solution that jailbreaks 3.1.2, as well as all devices. There is one problem regarding iPod Touch 3G users: this is currently a tethered jailbreak, meaning you have to have your iPod Touch 3G connected to the computer to enable the jailbreak. If you don’t, or if your iPod Touch 3G happens to reboot, you’ll be out of luck.

Follow the simple tutorial below to get started. If you’ve never done this before, don’t sweat it! It’s extremely easy. It only takes a few minutes and does the job without any problems or loss of files. There is also a video of how to do this at the bottom of this post (in HD).

Before we get started, you need to make sure that you are on a device with 3.1.2. You can either update it to this, or do a restore, which I recommend doing, because everything will be nice and new. I doubt there will be any errors during the jailbreak process if you happened to do a update and not a restore. You can download your firmware .IPSW file here: http://bit.ly/XLIp

Once your device is on 3.1.2, follow the below steps to jailbreak your device. It’s a very quick and painless.

  1. Plug your device in. Make sure iTunes is closed.
  2. Run ‘blackra1n.exe’ or ‘blackra1n.app’.
  3. Click on the ‘make it ra1n’ button. The jailbreak process should begin on both your computer and iDevice.
  4. After the jailbreak process is complete, run the ‘blackra1n’ app. Here, you can install Cydia, Icy, and/or Rock. Cydia is still the most popular form of installing jailbreak-only packages.

    Hi, I’ve got a Ipod Touch 16 Gb, with firmware 3.1.2.
    I keep getting stuck on “entering recovery…”. I’ve tried 3 times now, and I keep getting the same problem, even tho I think I do everything correct… Any ideas?

    Never mind, I solved it. It was a matter of changing the settings on how to run the file. Run the file without any compatibility settings and make not with administrator priviledges.
