PreBrowser – Full screen Palm Pre style web browser

PreBrowser – $1.99 in Cydia

PreBrowser is a Palm Pre style full screen web browser for jailbroken iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s. It provides a very nice interface for browsing the web. While being very nice, it’s $1.99 in Cydia. The same developer has actually made a $.99 for the app store called ‘Full Browser‘. That app is actually easier to use and has more up-front features, such as speed dial for web browsers. Which one should you try? Continue reading to find out.

The app lets you make multiple tabs. similar to the way the Palm Pre does it. You’ll get a interesting cover art view of your pages when you have more than one tab up.

At the top of the screen, you get your basic address bar. At the right of it, you get the favicon for Google. Tapping on this will replace the address that’s in the address bar with search terms (that you can enter and search for on Google).

In the upper-left, you’ll see a menu button which brings down a rather small list of options. They are all self-explanatory.

When you tap on New tab, a new blank page will come up. Now, in the middle of the screen, you’ll see a small blue circle button. Tapping on this will bring up the list of tabs, similar to the way the Palm Pre does it. It may take up to 5 seconds for this view to actually display itself on the screen, probably since the app has to render the reflection and whatnot. You can throw a tab away to close it.

The app seems to have a couple of bugs. Go to where you can view your tabs. Move  your tabs as shown in the picture in the screenshot after the previous paragraph. Take a screenshot. You’ll notice that your tabs are where they were before you took the screenshot. Go into one of them. Then go back to the tab view. You should see weird glitches as shown in the above two screenshots.

While this app looks nice, I don’t see it as a Safari replacement anytime soon. You’re better off paying a dollar less and buying the app this developer has made in the app store. It does more, is easier to use, and costs less money. OR, you can just stick with Safari, since it’s free and easy to use.
