sn0wbreeze 1.5.1 is the Windows version of PwnageTool. If you don’t know what PwnageTool is, it lets you create your own custom IPSW firmware files to be used on iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s. The latest version, 1.5.1, can jailbreak 3.1.3. If can also unlock a iPhone (if on the appropriate baseband). Now, sn0wbreeze isn’t for everyone. While it does allow for customization, such as adding custom Cydia sources, Rock, boot logo, recovery logo, etc, it may be better and easier to use redsn0w.
Sn0wbreeze works on the following devices:
- iPhone 2G
- iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)
- iPod Touch 1G
- iPod Touch 2G (non MC)
If you do have a iPhone 3GS (with the new bootrom) or a iPod Touch 2G/3G with a model number beginning with MC, you can still used a tethered jailbreak. If you still are unsure whether or not you fall into this category, check out f0recast, a free and small tool for Windows that tells you if you are restricted to a tethered jailbreak.
Sn0wbreeze has the following system requirements:
- Windows XP, Vista, or 7 (32-bit or 64-bit)
- .NET Framework 2.0
- 512MB of RAM
You’re going to need a stock copy of the 3.1.3 firmware. You can download it for ALL devices here.
- The start screen. Click OK to continue.
- A welcome screen. Click on the blue arrow to continue.
- DFU mode helper, which helps your device go into DFU mode (located in Help>DFU for after you build your IPSW).
- Mode selection screen. We’ll be going into Expert Mode, as it has more options.
- Choosing expert mode.
- Time to choose your 3.1.3 IPSW file. See the link earlier for links.
- Analyzing the selected IPSW file.
- Success! Click the blue arrow to continue.
- Time to customize our IPSW. Choose General and click on the blue arrow.
- Check “Activate the iPhone” if you’re planning on unlocking. If you aren’t, DON’T check this! It will result in no signal. Uncheck “Make IPSW NOR-Only” if you don’t know what this is. The third checkbox is optional. We recommend a 750MB root partition.
- Select what you want if you plan on unlocking your iPhone.
- Here, you can choose to install Cydia as well as Rock. Cydia is the default and is required.
- Add your own packages, download packages from various sources, and add your own custom Cydia repos.
- Time to build the IPSW!
- Still building…
- Huzzah!
- This is what choosing “No” from the previous screen does. Use the DFU mode helper to go into the proper recovery mode.
- The newly created firmware file, waiting to be restored!
So once you create your jailbroken IPSW, you must put your device into DFU mode (use DFU mode helper in sn0wbreeze), and shift+click on Restore in iTunes. If you get a 1600 error when restoring, you’ll have to use iREB to do some iTunes trickery.
