Downgrade & Jailbreak a 3.1.3 iPod Touch 2G “MC-Model” to 3.1.2 [UPDATED 5-2-2010-]

HUGE UPDATE [5-2-2010]!

THE SPIRIT JAILBREAK HAS BEEN RELEASED – IT’S JUST LIKE BLACKRA1N, BUT IT’S AN UNTETHERED JAILBREAK FOR ALL DEVICES – CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION!

UPDATED ON 3-20-2010 — GO TO THE BOTTOM.

A lot of people seem to believe that a iPod Touch 2G with a MC-model seems to be impossible to jailbreak. Well, I just did, and it’s very simple. Steps after the jump.

Follow me on Twitter (if you’d like): http://twitter.com/gumballtech

It basically works like this: Downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2, and run redsn0w 0.9.2 twice to jailbreak it.

To downgrade, download the iPod Touch 2G 3.1.2 firmware from here (the file name is iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw). Next, shift-click (Windows) or alt+click (Mac OS X) on the “Restore” button in iTunes, and point to that IPSW file you just downloaded. The restore process should begin. If you run into any problems or errors, leave it in the comments. You’ll need this IPSW all the time, so don’t delete it.

Once you’ve successfully restored and downgraded, download redsn0w 0.9.2 (Windows |  Mac). Once downloaded, run redsn0w from the ZIP. Click on the “Browse” button, and choose the IPSW file that you downloaded earlier. A popup will come up, asking you whether or not your iPod Touch 2G is a “MC-Model” device. Click on “Yes”, then the “Next” button. It will begin to do some fancy stuff. The next screen should have 2 checkboxes: Install Cydia, and “Just boot tethered right now”. Just check “Install Cydia”, and click on “Next”. Next, hold the Power and Home buttons until the screen on the redsn0w disappears (not on your iPod Touch). It will then jailbreak your device.

Now, since it will be a tethered jailbreak, you’ll have to run redsn0w once more to get it to your homescreen. Go through the same procedures as above (NOT the downgrading part, just the redsn0w part), but once you get to the screen with the 2 checkboxes, this time check the “Just boot tethered right now”, and click on “Next”, then follow the rest of the instructions.

Congratulations! Your iPod Touch 2G that was previously running 3.1.3, should now be downgraded to 3.1.2 and jailbroken (tethered).

Update, 3/20/2010: A lot of people have been having problems when restoring to the downloaded firmware (firmware is not compatible). Double check to make sure you’ve downloaded the proper firmware file. Also, this guide does not work for the 32GB/64GB iPod Touch 3G. If it came with 3.1.3 or has been updated to 3.1.3 from 3.1.2 without previously being jailbroken, then you’re out of luck. There’s no way to jailbreak those devices in those circumstances.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

    For error 3194:

That is basically saying that Apple don’t want you to downgrade, and so what you need to do is change the source of the yes or no. So heres how (For windows):

Open command promt and type this in

    CDWindowsSystem32driversetc
Click the enter key and then type: Edit hosts

You should come onto some sort of blue screen. Scroll to the bottom and on a new line, add

    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Now save the file, and make sure it’s saved. Restart iTunes and try the process again. As long as you don’t upgrade to 4.0 (As they introduce Soft blobs) this should work. Reply if it doesn’t

Ive solved your problem just look on latest posts

Oh and if you want to jailbreak, just use jailbreakme.com. As in, acess that through the safari browser. No computer needed. Common problems:

If the browser crashes then it’s just too many people trying at once. Keep trying.

If your iDevice goes into a constant reboot and stuck on the Apple logo it’s because it has too many Apps on it with Apples writing all over them. The ONLY way to get out of this is restoring, not deleting the apps. When restoring DO NOT JUST PRESS RESTORE, but instead follow the method above and shift restore to get to your desired version. IF YOU UPGRADE TO 4.0 OR FURTHER THERE IS NO GOING BACK.

Can not be downraded from 4.2.1 to 3.2.1… Is it possible to jailbreak 4.2.1 anyhow? :(

  • http://gumballtech.com brian

You can only downgrade if your SHSH blobs were backed up. Yes, 4.2.1 can be jail broken. The jailbreak has been available for quite some time.

If you guys just install 4.0 you can go on your ipod to http://www.jailbreakme.com and it will jailbreak it right then and there. Its a un-tethered jailbreak and you dont have to plug it into your computer.

  • GuyWhoAsksQuestions

Just go to jailbreakme.com on your ipod touch on safari and slide it to jalibreak and it will download Cydia for you!
