Got it to work on an iPhone 3G on a Mac

This are the steps I took

1)install itunes 9.2 beta
2)did a backup
3)Restored OS (clicked on restore while holding Option and selected iOS 4)
this took about 10 mins.

It works! I'm not a dev and it works!

Windows users: Sorry, but it looks like you'll have to wait until it's officially released. The update requires iTunes 9.2 beta, and it's currently only available on the Mac.

Did you change your hosts file? My bud had problems and after changing the hosts file to point to saurik server it worked just fine…

if you get a “-50″ error when starting the new iTunes the first time, just set your osx language to english and it will work

iTunes started fine. its just the restore to OS4 which is not working.

Check the list. It only work on iPhone 3G and 3GS + iPod Touch 2nd and 3rd gen

You dont need to restore, just hit alt + “check for updates” and choose the ipsw. update runs smoothly on my 3gs, device is registered as dev device, so I dont know if it works with others.

Installing iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G went without problems. When I opened Safari, however, it was unable to open any website; I got a 'Could not activate cellular data network error'. Worse, when trying to open Setting/General to check what might be wrong, I am thrown back to the home screen. Time and again. Restarting the phone does not work; I am still not able to open the General Pane under settings, and therefore unable to browse or email under 3G.

Anyone any idea about what might be the problem?

It works on my 3GS+Snow Leopard+iTunes 9.2 Beta. Sync is incredibly slow for music. been connected for about 5 minutes or so and it's only done 20 of 2337 songs.

Sorry if it's been discussed, but aside from the feature limitations, how well does a 3G run the new OS?? I'm worried that it may be bogged down and not be able to run OS 4 smoothly.

i tried installing iOS 4 GM version on my iPod touch with WINDOWS.
i am using LATEST version of iTunes on my windows and i tried “Restoring” my iPod touch to iOS 4.
It was unable to Restore, and gave me “Error 13″.
After that, my iPod touch was in DFU mode, so i had to “RESTORE” it to 3.1.3 to make it work.
Now i have tried RESTORING back to 3.1.3 many times and it doesn't complete!
it stays at 99% and DOES NOT complete. My iPod touch is a WASTE currently. PLEASE HELP!

Working great in Iphone 3GS in Spain with Movistar. No troubles, thnx guys! Just tell you iOS 4 it's not that big change from the earlier version, if you're not that enthusiastic about it,I'll recommend you to keep your old 3.1.3 jailbreaked firmware, I think it's maybe better to wait until this version will be jailbreaked to update, that's just my opinion…

Windows users: You can use a virtual machine with Mac OS X to install this. I'm in the process of doing so right now!

You don't need to restore, you can update, thankfully, since i didn't want to do the restore thing. The process is the same, basically, just install iT9.2 and option-click Check for Updates.

Then select the firmware from wherever you saved it and that's all… wait untill it's done. It does check online first, so maybe it had to do with apple switching something on the internet first.

to get a pin sim free you need to go to settings, phone, sim PIN and change it to off. youll need to check your carrier for the pin number

I love the new iOS, installing went smooth and I got everything back because I made a back up before I recovered. But I can't find the pictures I took before recovering anywhere on my iPhone. I didn't save them on my Mac (I know I'm a dumbass, I will in the future).. I'm having the same problem! iTunes tells me that I have 3.16 GB of Photos on my connected 3GS, but the Camera Roll is 100% empty…help?!

Try taking a picture with the Camera or try syncing a new photo onto your 3GS with iTunes. Maybe the photo library has to recompile?

Yes it will update your baseband. No you can't use unofficial carriers.

I have the same problem and none of it works… I can see that there are 250 mb pictures on the phone and my background is a picture that i have taken earlier from the camera roll.

I just did the upgrade on my 2 year old 3G, and it works. Some notes. There seems to be some discrepancy about whether it's alt-click restore or option-click restore – most of the instructions say alt-click, but when I did that it didn't ask me where my new firmware was, so I cancelled out. Option-click worked – I was immediately asked where the new firmware was. So make sure you get asked where your new firmware is before proceeding – it should ask right up front of the procedure.
Also note that while the upgrade itself doesn't take long – 10-20 minutes (I wasn't timing it), if you have a bunch of apps, the secondary part of the restore can take a long time – putting all the apps back on took maybe another 45 minutes. All my pictures and contacts, calendar info, etc were also restored. The only thing that didn't make it back on was all the music and videos – I have that set to sync manually, not sure if that's the issue or the weird little pop up message about not being able to finish the restore because another sync was in process(??). And note that all the data that I had in my apps – books, financial stuff in Ibank, game scores, etc, all were restored also.
I'm a little curious about how to change the background on the main screens – all the shots show this, but all I get on my 3G is the same old black background that I've always had – maybe that's a hardware dependent thing. I haven't found a setting for this.

Anyone figure out how to get the photos back?

Losing your photos would have been a helpful warning

After updating to 4.0, how do I get my apps/files back on the phone?
iTunes asks if I want to “restore” from my last backup, or register as a new phone.
I tried restore, and it took it back to 3.
Any tips?

In case of any problems, can someone please direct me to a guide of restoring back to 3.1.3?

The iPhone 3G doesn't support home screen wallpaper (or multitasking, obviously), unless you jailbreak it.

Option is the same thing as ALT.

Losing photos wasn't something that was know. Try taking a picture with the camera or sync a new photo with iTunes to maybe recompile the library.

If you let iTunes restore to your last backup, it'll put all of your stuff back on, which may take a while. Setting it up as a new phone will leave iOS 4 just like it were brand new.

When you do this upgrade, it's basically wiping the phone clean and installing the new operating system, then restoring all your info and apps from your last backup. If you didn't have your pictures backed up, they're going to be gone gone gone – nothing you can do about it. Basically all your pictures are synced with iphoto or aperture anyway, so if they're still in either of those apps, you just need to reset up the sync to itunes.

If you restored from the backup you did right before the upgrade, all your apps and info should be restored. It's possible you didn't actually update your firmware – reread all the posts below.

Sorry about the alt/option mixup – I'm using a logitech wave keyboard, which has the keys labeled somewhat strangely – it's supposedly a mac and windows compatible keyboard, but some of the keys have dual labels, and I get confused sometimes.

It gives me an error stating that it cannot update. Error (3002).

Set-Up: iPhone 3G, MacBook, iTunes 9.2.

Updating doesn't remove anything. It just replaces all the operating systems' files without removing anything. Restoring is what removes everything. Once that's completed, you'll have the option of starting clean or restoring from a backup.

Ah, I see. On my MacBook Pro, “alt” and “option” are on the same key .

Only issue I'm having is syncing my contacts, MobileSync crashes when syncing contacts. I think this is an iTunes bug b/c it did that before installed iOS4

Well last night i tried to downgrade to 3.1.3 and wupti, the pictures were there again and when i upgraded to 4.0 they where gone again, so i think it might be a problem with the iphone 3g ios 4.0

If i wanted to upgrade yet go back to 3.1.3, does that mean my baseband will change, and i won't be able to revert back?

where the folders at? i got the 3gs 16gb and i cant find the folders thingy nor default wallpapers

Nope… When I want to change the wallpaper, I go I settings>wallpaper>tap the two screens an then I get two choices; “Wallpaper” and “saved photos” but there isn't anything in the “wallpaper” folder. ( by the way, I've a IPT3G)

So far, iOS is working perfectly on my 3GS and it syncs fine (except for my custom ringtones) and I'm getting an error: The iPhone “Ed's iPhone” cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified.

It seems like everything is synced OK and my app settings are intact but this error disturbs me. Has anyone else gotten this error?

Weird. Everything seemed to be installed and restored correctly. However, my 3g isn't multitasking, the camera zoom isn't there, I can't set my wallpaper. I CAN use the folder feature, I see the new calculator button, and the new photo location setting is there, so is the new GPS indicator. It's like only half of it installed. So weird. Should I just restart the process?

Hi. I've installed 9.2 but keep getting Error 11 when I try to restore my iPhone with the iOS4. Any ideas? It is a dev registered UDID – but from reading other comments this shouldn't make any difference. RIght now phone seems to be bricked.

Getting the same on a 3G. Im sad!

It's like my os4 isn't complete. The only thing that has changed for me is the folder feature, the games center, the new calc button, the new GPS indicator, and the photo location feature. That's it. No multitasking, no wallpaper changing, no camera zoom. Weird.

I am currently overseas and have a Telstra locked iPhone 3GS. I am in NZ and have roamed to the Vodafone network). Does anyone know if when the restore is complete, whether the phone needs to be on the 'original' network as part of the restore process? (Ie. to call home to the Telstra server).

It will call “home” regardless if you are on Vodafone or back on Telstra. You wil get the usual MMS from Telstra at the beginning after the upgrade.

@Brian, I don't really know which files in my Backup folder I should count when looking for the size of my backup, but when I count all the files from 1 time (Yesterday, 19:21) then the file size is about 441 KB. I tried taking new pictures already but that doesn't work. So I think I just have to restore then, or go back to 3.1.3 and wait for the official version to be released.

The iPhone 3G does not support multitasking, only the 3Gs and above do. The 3G has limited support with the new iOS, so do-not expect a whirlwind of features unless you have the 3Gs or the shiny new iPhone 4

wow… thanks a lot, updated my 3GS 32GB with alt-check for update on macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.3 it took about 15 minutes and went very smooth, opened it after update finish and found all my settings and photos, 3g is working fine and wifi as well.

i wouldnt try it. apple purposely didnt include any form of support for iOS 4 in windows iTunes, because they dont need to (all apple developers have to use mac) and it stops the majority of people doing exactly what we are doing here, because they dont have access to a mac. you can try it tho….worst case scenario you will just have to do a restore

Update about the Battery drain on my 3GS. It did not change the drain of the Battery, it seams that all of my 5 Mailboxes are constantly connected even if I switch too manual instead of Push/Fetch. Anyone else with the same Battery problem???

All developers for iOS have to develop their applications on a mac. they have to use the iOS SDK (software developer kit) to develop them, or apple won't accept their applications onto the app store, and apple only makes the SDK for the mac platform. so thats why they won't release iTunes 9.2 for windows until june 21st. they never release betas of iTunes for non-developers.

lol, i can't believe the amount of people who know virtually nothing about the workings of their phone, and are still attempting this.

any type of software upgrade or restore automatically undoes any jailbreak that you have performed
cydia is an app installed via jailbreak
jailbreak is not yet available for iOS 4 and may not be for a little while
therefore, you cannot install cydia on iOS 4 at this time

also, if you are on windows and you try this, it is your own fault that your device is stuck in DFU mode and refuses to restore. you were warned by giant writing in this article. next time, read it

When you update an iPhone 3G to iOS4, you don't get all the features. This is probably because the 3G can't handle the full iOS. You can only get all the features on an iPhone 3GS (and of course iPhone 4). So yes, it's kind of half installed and no, you can't fix it.

backgrounding is done through an API. so it has to be built into pandora, not into the OS

app devs can submit their 4.0 compatible apps to the app store starting june 10th, and we'll probably see them pushed out on or just before june 21st. so yes, most of the 3rd party app backgrounding will not work yet. remember that even tho this is the GMC, it is still a developer release…its not supposed to be fully functional in terms of end user experience, its supposed to be used to test apps

I'm from Holland, got an iPhone 3GS from T-Mobile and had 3.1.3 installed. After upgrading, my iPhone language (Dutch) was still the same. I'm not German but I hope that helps you.
By the way, I didn't downgrade to 3.1.3 afterwards, so don't know if that works.

Restored to iOS 4 successfuly, however since I lost all my app data I'd like to restore to a previous backup and then Upgrade.

it will work on non-developer accounts. you just need a mac to download iTunes 9.2 and activate your phone.

jailbreak doesn't mean you unlocked it.

and if you unlocked it, you can't update to a newer firmware unless a jailbreak exploit is found.

Just installed it on a 3GS and it functions beautifully! Right clicked + alt 'check for updates' in iTunes 9.2 and located the ipsw file. Didn't lose any pictures, contacts, apps… nothing! Simples…

Because you have a 3G and not a 3Gs hence why you don't have Multitasking available.

Upgraded my 3GS and all went well except I don't seem to have 3G service anymore. I can send/receive phone calls, but the 3G is gone and data doesn't work. Tried a fresh install again, but still the same.

Did this last night on my iPhone 3G (not a dev here) and it worked flawlessly. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE PROPER BUILD! Don't force 3GS ipsw on your 3G

Update: well, after around six hrs of extremely heavy use i didn't notice any bug or anything unusual, my 3GS is working like a charm and the battery still have 71% of juice, i noticed that the iphone is a bit faster than before knowing that i had firmware 3.1.3, the 3G network is the same as before and the wifi might be a bit faster in searching and connecting, all in all looks very impressive with all the new features.

The restore worked well, and I was able to get most of my info back (I backed up+synced prior to restoring) but my photos are gone as well. The memory status bar in iTunes still shows that I have 500MB of photos, but they are nowhere to be found in my phone. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

That's one of the features that don't work on anything but the 4/3GS/iPT3G.

I think that that may be a iPhone 4 feature. Apple has to keep some software differences.

Good stuff. Worked perfectly on my factory unlocked 3GS 32GB. Backup before and restore after upgrade brought back everything including photos that I sync from iTunes.

The iPhone 3G doesn't support native multitasking out of the box. A jailbreak will fix that. See our other front page posts.

PLEASE.. make sure you sync your photos in your camera roll.. for some reason, even though I did a back up, and restored from that back up, I still lost all my camera rolls photos…. about 1000 photos of my son.. all gone..

If you've done a backup, then all of your photos should be synced to your computer. You can still easily get them back by extracting the photos form the backed up files with a third-party iPhone backup extractor.

You're supposed to ALT+Click on Restore… Our instructions have clearly said that.

Delete the iOS4 IPSW file and the original 3.1.3 IPSW, then use Recovery mode or DFU mode (instructions on iclarified) to restore, this'll download 3.1.3 again.

I am running MBP 10.5.8 is this my problem? and will this work w/o having a jailbroken or unlocked phone from at&t. I apologize for the basics that are only opaque to me on this.

In normal use the battery could last 1 day max but now it runs down while watching the percentage at the top op the screen. It's like it keeps counting down…. Doesn't matter though cause I'm updating at the end of the month to the original. But just wanted to know if someone else got the same problem.

Installed it on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen 32 Gig and it works GREAT! The only problem that I have (or at least that I can find) is that when I go to 'Wallpapers' in 'Settings' the wallpapers that are supposed to come with it are not there at all. Other than that it works! Thanks so much.

Isn't anyone concerned about Apple bricking phones that have been updated? I installed iTunes 9.2, alt+clicked 'check for update', pointed to the file, and then did not go ahead with it. Can someone tell me why it is worth it to take a risk that my phone will stop working just so I can get iOS4 a few days early?

It seemed to work fine on my 3rd gen Ipod touch. I got the wallpapers feature, it says 4.0 as OS on itunes and the device under general but I cannot get the folders part.
When I restored it asked me if i want to re install as the same name before or to start over like new ipod, should I have started over? I want the folders feature the most!!

You should brush up on the meaning of the word “brick”. In tech terms, it's when your device is completely broke and can't do anything. It's IMPOSSIBLE to brick an iDevice just by putting some software on it. It just ain't gonna happen. You can always downgrade back to what you were on before if you aren't comfortable.

Its killing my battery. it was fully charged about two hours ago and its at 52 percent now and I havnt done anything on it. I'm so glad I'm getting the new one in two weeks!!!

Really really like this new OS, feels a lot more smoother and multitasking is something now after hours I cant live without. Shame many apps (like Last.fm) don't support it yet but that will change soon.

Has anyone had any success in installing iOS4 on someone else's Mac? I have a friend that is willing to let me borrow their Macbook to do the install. I am not in any need of syncing my phone after the install. I can wait til Itunes 9.2 is released on Windows.

I'm running snow leopard, itunes 9,2 on VMWare on win7 x64 and get to the loading bar onscreen but itunes said “restore error 1161″, i tried again and it said “error 14″. Tried in and out of DFU.

I lost all of my pictures – the data stayed on as a 3.1.3 backup until i decided to 'backup' my ios4 and it overwrote all of the files. NOT happy

Chris – what extractor did you use? I made the following mistake:

ran backup prior to ios4 installation, saw backup files existed but they were not on my phone. I ran a secondary backup on my iphone. It completely overwrote every one of the 1200 pictures and videos I had on my phone and I will never get them back. I am very, very disappointed in this from a consumer perspective. The fact so many are having this issue so close to release is beyond me.

No i did not sync with iPhoto, no i dont normally use my mac for anything other than work so this is just an overall frustrating process. In addition, multitasking DOES NOT WORK as they advertise. If you run Pandora, you should be able to swap into another app and hear music (or use the pause, play, etc from the multitask bar).

I've upgraded several 3GS devices with NO issues – camera roll and all intact.

Wound up rolling my own device back to 3.1.3 (with the help of your site), however, as I quickly found out that the iOS 4 release breaks the L2TP VPN connection I have to the corporate office (SonicWALL NSA 2400).

This worked like a charm on my 3G, however now I am encountering syncing issues with iTunes 9.2. When I go to sync the iphone it takes a long time and iTunes shows that it is backing-up the iPhone, however before the process completes the iPhone times out and resets itself. This happens before new music/apps can be installed from iTunes onto the iPhone. The calendar is also not updated by the time this happens. Not sure if the problem is with iPhone or iTunes. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

I think this is great but the only problem is that the iPod Touch 2G software does not contain folders or multitasking, or the ability to put a different picture as your background, which I think are the main reasons for iOS4, so could I have some help?

Hi Brian, thanks for the tip but it's defiantly not the mailbox. I have tried all different solutions so far with no success. It's maybe a carrier problem in Australia as some information need to be synced between the phone OS and your local carrier (like Telstra). It's just a guess but I will patiently wait until the final is out. In the meantime I have downgraded back to 3.1.3 just to gain some more battery life again.

After restoring to IOS 4 a get empty iphone so i'm doing a sync. Everything is ok but there are no my contacts and SMS sent/received nothing. changes option in INFO in itunes “contact calendars etc” did nothing. apps music photos can be synced contacts no . You screwed up, you should have done an update instead of a restore. Update keeps all your info intact.

If not, then just restore to the backup you did right before you installed iOS 4.

Just installed iTunes 9.2 and downloaded the 3GS ipsw. When I OPTION+CLICK the Restore button after backing up my current settings, I get the error “could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible”. Same happens when I OPTION+CLICK on the Update button. Anyone else with this issue yet?

For all of you who lost photos, follow the instructions in the FAQ. I lost all of mine, but when I right-clicked on my iPhone on the left hand side and chose “Restore from backup” it worked. Good luck!

3GS on O2 in UK, worked exactly as described.

Only thing slightly different was that after the 'restore' of iOS4 I had to then restore again in iTunes (the default option I was given) to get my content back.

Just wanted to throw a little issue I had which I've now solved..
Every-time I took a pic or screen-shot it would place it in the 'camera roll' folder or not! but I couldn't delete or email it. This issue went along with some other camera related errors.

Anyway long story shortened it turned out that there was a ownership problem with the following folder [code]/private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE[/code] & I'm not sure what cause it (upgrade or jailbreak). Ssh'ed in & chown'ed 100APPLE from root:mobile to mobile:mobile & once this was done all was working fine..

Just thought it may help someone else..

I've got a 3GS. My music library and all syncs are on my PC. Ive upgraded to 4.0 GM via my macbook. But then all my contacts/photos/music/sms threads were all gone. You cannot sync back to a windows PC using the iOS 4 GM. So I took my latest backup off my PC and transferred it to my macbook. Re-installed iOS 4 gm and restored using my newly transferred backup. Bingo, all my contacts/photos/sms threads. So I just transferred my music over to my macbook and will sync off that until iPhone 4 comes out then I'll just get that.

What carrier are you on? With AT&T, you don't get cellular data network unless you do some IPCC/carrier profile junk.

I assume they removed it due to speed issues. I still have speed issues. I'll restore my whole system with the official release, hope there will be some minor changes in this sector. If not, I think there will be a iOS4.1 soon.

Just updated it. I used alt – update and updated the OS. all my apps, settings and music is untouched. The new OS works perfect! Much faster! The new features are sweet!! So, when you do not choose backup but update, nothing is erased from your iphone

For people that cannot wait several days i can confirm you can install all OS4 beta's including the new golden version on Windows using VMware. Run Snow Leopard, and then use itunes to restore. However the golden release will only work on 9.2 so download beforehand. My UUID is registered so cannot comment whether is will work if yours is not. I have had no problems with all OS4 releases doing it this way on XP. hope this helps answers some peoples questions

Ah this is great. Lovin iOS4 on my 3GS. Opening/closing apps is much quicker I must say. There's a really annoying bug I noticed though. My iPhone was “stuck” in field test mode from when I used field test one time and when I closed it I was still able to switch from bars to decibels for signal strength. But now, it's like it's set to decibels by default. Every app I launch sets it back to decibels, and it goes back to decibels if it loses and then gets service again. Very annoying.

I keep trying to update but it wants to contact the Apple iphone software update server cannot be contacted or is temporarily down. But I can check for regular updates and everything else! Anyone have any advice?

I had read that “reset all settings” was the solution to the “stuck in field test” problem quite a while ago, but as it always stayed set to bars unless I tapped it with the previous OS, it was never that much of a problem so I never did it. I wasn't sure exactly what settings it reset, like if it reset app settings or notes or anything like that. I decided to brave it, and can confirm that it only resets the settings you can change in the settings app itself. It doesn't touch any of your apps, not even mail.

Managed to install it on my 3GS (Hold Shift and click Check for Update) NO NEED TO RESTORE! Works like a charm, i didn't loose anything at all. If you rely of an unlock, DO NOT UPGRADE!!!!! Make sure you're on iTunes 9.2 (Now available for Win & Mac)

Yeah, I don't have any backup of my contacts etc. (because in Windows you can't back up everything in contacts), so If I do restore, it will delete them, right? I don't really want to do that… Same goes for messages.

Apparently the Windows 7 method is buggy so get over it. A lot of Microsoft stuff on Mac seems to not run as well (although it runs perfectly on Windows), and also visa versa. Competing companies… weird huh?

Hi all, most current version of OS X and iPhone 3GS. Everything works great, but im having trouble with the iPod.app crashing every time I open it. I read that this is common with the beta IPSWs, but some of the solutions i've found online are not working. Any suggestions? The normal release will be out in a few days so its no big deal, but if you have any ideas let me know.

Apparently this was happening with the GM 3.0 release as well.

Scratch that solved my own problem. Apparently the iPod app crash can start happening if you play music while the phone is still plugged into the computer and then pull the cable.

just needed to sync again and it solved the problem.

I am still having another small issue. When i try to assign a wallpaper from my library to the home/lockscreen they are all blurry and pixilated as if the images haven't quite loaded properly.

when i first pulled the phone after the sync my homescreen was the lockscreen that i was using prior to the 4.0 update and it looked great….. now i assigned it again and not soo much i guess my field of pot background is no longer.

tried restart, hard reset, and re-sync…. such a minor problem, but soo annoying

I have downloaded and got everything working well on my 3Gs … HOWEVER is anyone else have the problems that I'm having? Here are some of what I've found..

1) NO PICTURE MESSAGING IN SMS! (also no “send via sms” in picture option

2) internet/facebook seem VERY slow!

3) and this is the worst one.. I unplugged my phone @100% batter and 8 hours afterwards (keep in mind it was sitting on my end table not being used) it was a 32%! WHAT A POWER HOG! This is without anything running in the task menu as well… any ideas?

I had a game open and a similar thing happend to me. Some games are not very efficient with system resources. I tried the free Skate It demo and got a phone call. When the call ended I tossed my phone in my pocket. Two hours later I noticed it was really hot. The screen was off, but it was still running the game.

Until apps are updated for multitasking there may be a few issues like this

Its not necessary to downgrade from gm to install the public release.

It will not automatically update in itunes just by connecting it and clicking update, but if you click restore you can back up your phone, it will download the new release that came out today and then restore all your stuff after.

The build of gm candidate and version that is available today is same (8A293 for 3gs). That should mean that there is no difference in those two versions.
