[iOS 4] Enable multitasking & home screen wallpaper on iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2G [UPDATED 6-10-2010]

*UPDATED ON 6-19-2010*

Multitasking, home screen wallpaper, and battery percentage are all features in iOS 4 that won’t be on the iPhone 3G, and the iPod Touch 2G. BUT, a simple tweak will allow all of these to run on said devices. Instructions after the jump.

First, you need to be jailbroken. Follow our guide here on jailbreaking a iPhone 3G (4.0 GM) or an iPod Touch 2G (4.0 GM).

With the latest version of redsn0w that was updated on 6-10-2010, you can easily add multitasking and home screen wallpaper during the jailbreaking process by using redsn0w. If you’re already jailbroken, open up redsn0w and check the option that says “already pwned”, and choose the other options that you want.

  • Iarmstrong84

How do I disable multitasking but keep the homescreen wallpaper on a 3G?

  • alfie

using redsnow to jailbreak iphone 3g 4.0 to enable multitasking and home screen wallpaper will only make your phone move slower..

  • patrick sheppard

I Jailbroke my iPod touch 2nd gen and restored it to IOS 4 using Redsn0w_Win_0.9.5b5-4. I installed Cydia, custom boot icon, multitasking and user wallpaper all with redsn0w. Then I installed SBsettings from Cydia, it said reboot device, I tapped it and it seemed to work until it turned on in safe mode; how do i get it to respring and exit safe mode? HELP!!!!

  • patrick sheppard

i can't exit safe mode on my ipod touch 2nd gen IOS 4 jailbroken by the latest redsn0w. HELP!!!

  • No

with mine i just held the power button and the home button at the same time for about 20 seconds and it came back on…

  • Sithhappens584

I used redsn0w to jailbreak my iphone and then installed ultrasn0w to unlock it. It worked but the funtions are a little sluggish. I can multitask and change my backdrop but again my iphone is a little slower than usual. I restored, jailbreak and instal over four times. Also did some troubleshooting to make it run faster but it is still the same. I did a lot of extensive research but I have found no answer. Does anybody know where to find Blackra1n for 4.0?

  • Sithhappens584

Yes, just make sure you back up before you jailbreak. Then after you do, restore from back up. This will not change your firmware but it will update your contacts and e-mail addresses.

blackra1n isn't compatible with 4.0. iOS 4 is naturally slower than 2.x/3.x, even when not jailbroken. That is just the way iOS 4 works. It needs more memory. The iPhone 3G only has 128MB RAM, so there's barely any that's left over for other things, so everything will be a bit slower than before.

Uninstall SBSettings from Cydia while in Safe Mode.

    How about without jailbreaking??????
Come on, every single article is “Jailbreak this” “Jailbreak that”!!!!!
Apple told me you can put a homescreen background on the iOS 4.0 version of the touch!!!
    Why can't i?
Is it because i have an 8gb touch or what????
    Please help!!!

  • http://gumballtech.com brian

Umm… Apparently you didn't listen hard enough to what they said. The iPod Touch 2G isn't getting all of the features that other devices will be getting, so you won't get multitasking, home screen wallpaper, or bluetooth keyboard support. The iPhone 3G doesn't get those things [without a jailbreak] either.

to disable that it runs in the background just dubble tap the home button and hold one untill the apps starts to shake then there is a button left top corner on the app to cancel the backgrounding

I was expecting iOS4 would give my 3G (not s) phone folders for the apps. But it's not there. Is that feature only for 3GS- and 4-hardware? I hadn't thought so but the foldered apps are nowhere to be seen.

  • http://gumballtech.com brian

iOS on the iPhone 3G DOES support Folders, which is why there's already a “Utilities” folder on your first page.

  • Gomez65

I jailbreaked my 3G 4.0 OS iPhone using jailbreakme.com. I have Cydia installed. How can I customise my background if I didn’t use reds0w?

  • http://gumballtech.com brian

You have to manually edit /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist to add “homescreen-wallpaper”. There should be packages in Cydia that can do this for you.

i have enabled multitasking, home screen, battery percentage and cydia on my iPhone 3G through redsn0w. the home screen, battery percentage and cydia work fine, but the multitasking doesn’t. i don’t have a clue where this ‘already pwned’ option is, so if there is anyone who could help me find this option or tell me another way of enabling multitasking then i would be very grateful.

There I no 8GB iPod Touch 3G. I thought mine was like that too, but apparently the 3G only came in 32 and 64 GB, not 8 GB. That means you have a 2G.

Simply Adding the following textvalues to the N82AP.plist (which resides in /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/) file will enable Multitasking and Wallpaper on your iPhone 3G:

    multitasking

    homescreen-wallpaper

Note make sure you line al; the trues and keys with the existing data
