[iOS 4] Enable multitasking & home screen wallpaper on iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2G [UPDATED 6-10-2010]

*UPDATED ON 6-19-2010*

Multitasking, home screen wallpaper, and battery percentage are all features in iOS 4 that won’t be on the iPhone 3G, and the iPod Touch 2G. BUT, a simple tweak will allow all of these to run on said devices. Instructions after the jump.

First, you need to be jailbroken. Follow our guide here on jailbreaking a iPhone 3G (4.0 GM) or an iPod Touch 2G (4.0 GM).

With the latest version of redsn0w that was updated on 6-10-2010, you can easily add multitasking and home screen wallpaper during the jailbreaking process by using redsn0w. If you’re already jailbroken, open up redsn0w and check the option that says “already pwned”, and choose the other options that you want.

Enjoy!

There is no Battery Percentage for me to turn on?! I've been to Settings-General-Usage but there is nothing that comes close to Battery Percentage!

  • wizdude

Your guide is wrong. The battery percentage option only exists on the 3GS and not on the 3G.

Your comment is wrong. Native battery percentage can be enabled on any 3.x or 4.x device with a simple plist edit. I thought I've already included this in my post, but I guess I missed it. It's included now.

thanks for updating your guide brian. how did you remove the icon shadow? is there a plist option for that as well or it is configured somewhere else?

You'll have to remove or rename /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/WallpaperIconShadow.png and respring or restart.

All of my apps multitask no problem. Once you open something, it runs in the background. Double click the home button, and all running apps are shown. There is also no way to disable it at all. Also, there is no way to close an App when finished. You use the phone, then the camera, then text, they are all open til you double click home, and then close each one by holding them like when deleting apps.

Is it possible to enable this without jailbreaking? I'm on my 3rd iPod Touch because of jailbreaking.

If you download iFile, you can go into /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard/N82AP.plist. There, you go down to <key>homescreen-wallpaper</key>. Below that, it will say “<true/>”, so change that value to “<false/>”. Tap on Save, exit, and shut down. Wait a few seconds (10 or 15), and power up again. There you go, black wallpaper and no lag :]. Same thing happened to me. I'd like to use a wallpaper, but the iPod seems to lag a little when opening apps. You'd think that multitasking would cause the lag, but apparently the wallpaper takes more RAM.

It means Springboard has crashed. All you need to do is unlock your iPhone (Do the slider thing) and press the text on the status bar( wherethe time and wi-fi status annd phone reception goes aand press restart)

I was getting major lag and freezing with both the wallpapers and the multitasking turned on so I just restored. I don't care about multitasking but I really want wallpapers. Will I still get major lag with just wallpapers enabled? (I'm on an iPhone 3G.)

    Thanks.

I think your use of “major” is a bit much.

  • jpFogs

It was major. Thirty seconds for an app to open, 10 seconds for texts to populate after I type them. Either way, now it's jailbroken and wallpaper and multitasking is enabled. How can I just get rid of the multitasking option?

I just want to be able to have my own custom background, does it still run smoothly and everything if I just enable that, without the Cydia Installation?
