The difference between “your” and “you’re”

It seems as if most of the Internet population does not seem to know what the difference is between “your” versus “you’re”, so they often say “your” instead of “you’re”, or vice-versa. This post will hopefully teach you the difference, should you not already know this elementary piece of knowledge.

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you know that I fix people’s mistakes when they say “your” instead of “you’re”, or something like that.

YOUR

Think of “your” referring to somebody’s possession, so for example:

How was your day?

Can I come to your house later today?

It’s very simple. Most people know this one, but not the next one…

YOU’RE

Simply put, “you’re” is “you are”. Some examples:

Young man, you’re going to have to move your car.

You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen :) .

A lot of people say “your” when they’re supposed to be saying “you’re”. Here are some examples:

Your lame.

Your seriously the coolest person I’ve ever met.

Those are big no-no’s, so don’t do that.

Hopefully this post has taught you the correct way to use these 2 words.

Lol, I must say you’re right (lol, see?) I’ve seen so many people on the web making that mistake. I knew all this of course! (Maybe that’s because I’m french! I have learned english, so that’s basic lesson)
I see no replies to this post, I guess some people are feeling stupid at this moment…
Don’t worry though, I’ve seen those same mistakes on french blogs!

I spell it “ur” avoids problems. I think most people know the difference. We tend to right faster then were thinking. Lots of words that sound a like have to many spellings. People are getting lazy, there spell checkers are doing all the work.

Ugh… Maybe I should make “English for Internet Dummies”.

“I spell it “ur” to avoid problems. I think most people know the difference. We tend to write faster than we’re thinking. Lots of words that sound alike have too many spellings. People are getting lazy, their spell checker’s are doing all of the work.”

    You’re welcome.

    Good on you, Brian!
It’s not only the “your” and “you’re” mistakes that have me grimacing, I’m also astounded at how many people do not know the difference between “there”, “their” and “they’re”.

Nice try Brian, but you don’t need an apostrophe in ‘spell checkers’ as it’s a plural… YOU’RE welcome ;)
