Just completed the update on a 3G and all seems to be good. Initial tests show improvements if you are using and old iPhone 3G. Seems to fix the iphone just locking up as it did previously on iOS4 with any of the old 3g models I have used in the last few weeks. Mine was practically a snail and so painful to use the last two months. Still waiting for my iPhone 4.

Is iTunes 10 needed to update? I am not seeing it available on Apple’s site or when I check for updates in iTunes.

No. iTunes 9.x.x works fine.

How are people able to use this ipsw (iphone 4), when I use shift & restore and this file in iTunes, it fails when contacting the Apple update server.

why wont my itunes read the file? shift+update reads the file but wont do anything else?

Yes. Works fine on 9 and 10.

That would be pointless. The golden master IS the same build as what will be released next week. There will be no need to upgrade to anything else. A new update won’t even show up in iTunes.

tried to install first with update the in DFU mode neither works.

iTunes 9.2.x.x and Windows7 64bit. Shift+Update/Restore not working. I’ve searched everywhere and tried everything. Nothing works.

I enabled the “root” Administrator account. That is the primary account I use on the PC. Doesn’t matter whether I “Run as Administrator”, or not because I already am. I’ve tried XP compatibility modes. NOTHING works. Has anybody found a fix for this?

Sorry for the scare. iPhone is not bricked, but I did get the ‘Connect to iTunes’ scare screen after giving me an error message when trying to update. Had to do a restore, will try again after it’s finished restoring.

Can I try it too? I’m using an iPod touch 2G MC model and a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit computer with iTunes 10.

Ok, was able to restore the phone after the original error when trying to update to 4.1. After restore, I tried updating again by ‘alt-shift’ clicking on Update and chosing the 4.1 and it seems to be working!

Not unless you jailbreak.

Possibly in iOS 4.2 they may release home screen wallpapers for iPhone 3G users. It isn’t a huge deal but it’s something I’d like to have to give my iPhone a new look!

No. 4.1 isn’t even officially out yet. There will be a jailbreak eventually, probably within 4 weeks from now. Regarding the downgrade: just don’t upgrade .

The point of releasing a GM to developers before releasing to the users is to test their apps. So there is no guarantee that all of your apps will continue to work if you upgrade. I wouldn’t think there will be many issues with apps since this is just a point release, but you really don’t know until it is tested. So in other words, if you upgrade and some apps break then you are going to have to wait until the developer fixes it.

Dawn. I just tried it using iTunes 10 on my Windows 7 PC and it contacted the Apple update server and did the upgrade with no issues. Not sure what happened in your case. Maybe try it again?

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 3 2010.

Updated iPhone 3G flawlessly. On PC running Windows XP, use Shift+Click on CHECK for UPDATE (not restore).

Entire process took 13 minutes. Then 10 minutes more to sync my music/apps etc back onto phone.

Performance on 3G is perfect. Fast, no lag.

connect the iphone4 open itunes click on your iphone tab and then hold OPTION and click update, now i windows comes up and look for the firmware that you downloaded. thats it.. it should do the rest by its self

i have an iphone 3g i upgraded it to 4.1 GM used redsnow5b5-5 but it still give tht itune sign .. my sim is nt supportive … does tht mean redsnow doesnt work on my device ?

There’s been some rumblings that Apple is removing Game Center support from the iPhone 3G – Can anybody confirm if the iPhone 3G 4.1 firmware has gamer center or not?

I’m not 100% sure. I know that it’s available on the iPod Touch 2G running iOS 4.1.

i have installed the iOS 4.1 8B117 on my 3G. No jailbreak jet, no gamecenter, definitly faster. It feels like im holding an 3GS !

im using the GM now and ive downloaded the official 4.1 from itunes yesterday.. can i just do a shift click and update to 4.1 official? or do i need to do a restore from the GM??

There’s no reason to, as they’re the same thing.

i know they both have the same firmware number but i dont know if the GM has a time bomb in it and when/if it goes off and im not near my computer

that means your phone is not from the same carrier as your sim therefore your have to unluck the phone with ultrasn0w first ( find in CYDIA )

No. Game Center isn’t available for the iPhone 3G at all, unless you jailbreak .
