How to turn off / remove iTunes Ping

Personally, I find iTunes Ping to be an utterly useless “social network”. So, if you’ve found yourself scratching your head as to how to close your iTunes Ping account, then this post is for you.

DEACTIVATING iTUNES PING

If you’re ready to close your iTunes Ping account for good, simply follow the below steps.

1) First, click on “iTunes Store” in the left sidebar, and click on “Account” in the right sidebar.

2) Next, click on the “Turn Off” button under the iTunes Ping section.

3) You’ll then get a confirmation popup. Click on “Turn Off”.

That’s it! iTunes Ping is now officially off, and all of your Ping remnants will be permanently deleted in about 7 days.

this doesn’t turn anything “OFF” The ping button is still there and the ping junk comes up when you right click to edit.

  • adamglasgow

yay – i finally got rid of it!

  • PingSucks

Same. How do we get rid of the ping button on each track list?

  • Ronbinion

I find ping to be insanely annoying. I’m not a follower. This is another thinly veiled ruse to extract marketing information and stimulate people spending money in the guise of being a hip new cultural social phenomenon. I’m tired of my life being co-opted by marketers who think they can invent the next hot new trend and then shove it at me in the form of a “update” that I is annoying at best and downright invasive and breaching my privacy at worst. Even just the stupid ping icon makes me want to throw up because it makes me there is a marketer tabulating every time I listen to a song.

I enjoy using itunes..but this obvious and devious “update” is wrong.

Cheers. It was startin to piss me off

I have that problem, too! I never opted into Ping, but the stupid Ping button still pops up on every track! >(

That’s how much Apple wants people to get into it. Maybe they’re selling our information or something. It’ll be dead in a few years.

If you have iTunes 10 you must click on your account name on the top bar, far right and then click Account.

maybe . . . if you have an itunes account – but what if you never signed up?
You can’t get past the “new account” window

It”s not on and I won’t turn it on just to turn it off.
    Apple screwed-up on this one.

My account info already shows Ping off. the only option I see is “get started” and I don’t know how to get rid of the buttons on the songs. And every time I choose a song a ping window comes up and I have to click it off, I have a PC. Any ideas?

You can’t. You can only turn the service off if it was enabled. You can’t completely remove Ping from iTunes.

Simple method To disable the stupid ping button next to EVERY song and the ping button from the left side bar: Theres a catch tho.

    In preferences>Parental Controls>Disable Itunes store.

This will remove all the ping buttons but you will need to enable the store manually from the parental controls option every time you want to access the store.

defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE

You may also want to go into your iTunes Store account info and shut off “Recommendations and Ping Posting.” It’s down near the bottom.

  • hecatelion

This helped–but under “disable iTunes store” it also had “disable Ping”. Thanks for the tip!

    …and thank god for that…

Ping was the final straw, made the leap and ditched iTunes permanently. Got a Galaxy S, gave away the Apple gear to my 13 year old niece.

One fairly effective way to get rid of all of the annoying artifacts of Ping is to disable it using the Parental Controls (Edit->Preferences->Parental Controls). Doesn’t require signing up to turn it off.

  • Smilelol1

    awesome it worked! Thanks

  • Gtulenko

Thank you, JJ for the info about turning off Ping recommendations! I’ve been clicking “Do not show this dialog again” for months.

  • Wyamka

Thank you…this is exactly what I was searching for.
