It’s not often that reporting on smart clothing and wearable tech can bring tears to ones eyes… Chronic Pain, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s disease and many other related nerve disorders affect the lives of millions around the world. Thanks to advances in smart clothing technology by Swedish inventor Fredrik Lundqvist, MD of Inerventions, there may be some relief on the horizon! Originally self funded out of Fredrik’s own wallet and then successfully pitched on Dragon’s Den, this innovation left everybody misty eyed because of it’s potential to help so many. Check out more details after the jump.

The ElectroDress is an individualized tailored rehabilitation suit for patients with significant rehabilitation needs. This 7 piece suit has electrodes and motors stitched into place throughout that can provide EMS (electronic muscle stimulation) and vibration therapy to specific regions to assist with muscle relaxation, increase range and ease of movement and potentially lead to rehabilitation. By triggering reflexes that inhibit or stimulate various muscles in a patients body, modulating and controlling muscle tone, and altering muscle tension the electrodes in this suit can strengthen weak muscles and counteract improperly tensed muscles. It can potentially be tailored to each individual patient to assist with rehabilitation and improve their quality of life significantly.
Termed a “therapeutic assistance device” the Electro Dress can not only help those with nerve disorders but can bring relief to those affected by stroke, brain injuries, rheumatism, and diseases that cause improper muscle tension and upper motor neuron damage (OMS).
The Electro Dress by Inerventions is an inspiring project and an exciting use of smart textiles and wearable technology. It is scheduled to release its first version in late 2012. We hope this project is a resounding success and hope it is able to inspire more inventors to push the boundaries of smart clothing textiles and wearable technology to continue improving the lives of millions.
