Wearable technology doesn’t have to be all high tech circuitry and and electrical gadgets. Just ask Sara Reinersten who is the worlds first female leg amputee to finish all 140.6 miles of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. Nike is using her as the spokesperson for their latest product. After all the buzz last year of Harry Borden, an olympic athlete who funs on two prosthetic carbon-fiber blades, Nike is taking notice and pitching in with their new Nike Sole running shoe that fits on these cool looking carbon-fiber Flex-Run blades (made by Ossur) and offers increased stability and predictability on the track.

Nike SoleComprised of an outsole, midsole, and a material called Aeroply which is a thermoplastic urethane that comes from recycled Nike air bags, the new Sole shoe wraps tightly around the carbon fiber running blade of the Flex-Run and enhances it’s stability on and off the track massively. The new sole is lightweight, durable, and easy to use. Installing the Nike Sole is as simple as slipping the shoe onto the running blade and locking it down with a single snap, and that’s it.

According to the Nike press release-

“Previously, Reinertsen would use the outsole of a traditional running shoe as her prosthetic “shoe.” With limited innovations with prosthetic soles, this cobbling approach to creating solutions using regular running footwear had become the norm.  The new Flex-Run with Nike Sole provides a reliable advantage and is now available through prosthetists’ offices globally.”

While the rest of the world is oohing and aahing over their latest iDevices, it’s exciting to see advances being made in the fields of medical therapy and prosthetics that utilize the latest and greatest in wearable technology to enhance the lives of millions. Our only question after previewing the Nike FuelBand is- does this Nike Sole sync with the Nike+ network? :)
