Greenpois0n RC5-2 iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak Released for Windows! Go Download It NOW!!!

Alright, so Greenpois0n RC5 jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 Windows version was just released! Also, some errors have been fixed from the previous RC5 release. What else is in store? Read on for more info….

Ok, so Greenpois0n can jailbreak the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch devices running on iOS 4.2.1 . Now, Greenpois0n did have a couple of errors when it was first released. The Chronic Dev Team patched those up pretty quickly though! Thanks to one of the members of the Dev Team, the Greenpois0n website is back online and is stable now as well.

Here are some things that I’ve learned from this new jailbreak:

1. If you’re currently tethered because of redsn0w jailbreak, you CAN untether using Greenpois0n with no problems or a restore at all. Just use Greenpois0n like you normally would. You won’t get the loader app but you should have Cydia already because of redsn0w. (Note: this has only been tested by me on iPhone 4 and not any other devices!!!)

2. The custom boot logo is awesome. Can’t wait to see more even though the Greenpois0n one is a little glitchy.

3. It might take it a bit when it gets to “Greenpois0n initialized”. It did that to me. Just give it a bit and it’ll start exploiting after about 10-30 seconds of waiting.

RecoveryGuard – Stop Accidental iOS Updates for Jailbroken Devices

Early morning, pre coffee, you plug in your iPhone to sync it up, a box pops up and you hit “Ok.” Three seconds later you are cursing and kicking and smacking yourself. We’ve all been there. You just accidentally hit the “Update” button in iTunes and watched as your precious device starts to update and lose it’s jailbreak. Well, now there’s a new tweak in Cydia called RecoveryGuard that blocks iTunes from updating your device! How does it work? Read more to find out…..

RecoveryGuard works a lot different than most Cydia apps out there, but then again not many Cydia apps have the purpose of what RecoveryGuard’s purpose is. RecoveryGuard, when it has been installed to your device, tricks iTunes into thinking you have the latest iOS firmware. Therefore, when you accidentally hit “Update”, a pop-up will appear from iTunes stating that you’re on the most recent version of iOS when you might be on 4.1!

So, how do you get this tweak? Well, just add the following repo to your Cydia sources, refresh and then search for RecoveryGuard (Remember, your device must be jailbroken in order to install this!!!): http://cydia.pushfix.info . Enjoy never losing your jailbreak because of iTunes!

A new day, A new jailbreak has just arrived! The Chronic Dev Team has just been released GreenPois0n RC5 to the public to bring an untethered jailbreak for all iDevices. Unlike RedSn0w 0.9.7, this does not require 4.2b3 SHSH files to be saved on Cydia. If you just got your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch for Christmas and want to jailbreak it now, then this is the jailbreak method for you Method below, and problems and solutions below:

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS WITH THE GREENPOIS0N RC5 UNTETHERED JAILBREAK:

Problem : I got stuck in “Greenpois0n initialized”, retried, re updated. It remains the same.
Solution : open “terminal”, type SUDO, open Greenpois0n as “Show package contents”, go MacOS folder & drag greenpois0n to terminal & hit enter. / Via iSurenix /
Problem : My iPhone / iPod is showing blank (black) screen after jailbreak, iPhone / iPod is still in DFU mode after applying jailbreak.
Solution : Leave your iDevice for two minutes, now press and hold both power and home button at the same time for 10-15 seconds until your iPhone / iPod boot as normal.
Problem : Greenpois0n loader is crashing when I install Cydia, I am unable to install cydia via greenpois0n loader.
Solution : For those having trouble getting Cydia via the GP Loader, just let redsn0w install it (don’t choose the Monte option) / Via MuscleNerd /

3DBoard – 3D Meets the iPhone SpringBoard

3DBoard is a new tweak in Cydia that allows you to make your homescreen icons appear 3D.

3DBoard works by taking advantage of the iPhone’s sensory hardware, therefore giving off a 3D effect to your SpringBoard! You can toggle the effect in the settings app of your device. 3DBoard works with all iDevices on iOS 4.0+ . Check out the link below for a demonstration video of 3DBoard by it’s creator. Note that the video was made before the tweak was released so changes could exist!

What’s so great about this tweak? Well, it adds 3D to your iPhone without the need for 3D glasses! You gotta admit, that’s pretty cool! Now, how would this tweak look combined with DeepEnd? I’m not sure, but I bet the effect would be awesome!

Now this tweak isn’t free though. It’s at a steep price of $2.99 in Cydia, but $2.99 isn’t a bad price for what it does though! You can purchase and download 3DBoard on the BigBoss repo which should already be installed in Cydia.(Remember, you must have a jailbroken device in order to install this!!)

USB Drive – Use Your iPhone As a USB Storage Drive!

USB Drive is a really convenient jailbreak app from Cydia that let’s you use your iPhone as a USB storage drive. This allows you to put any content on the device for easy transfer to another computer using your iPhone!

USB Drive allows you to use however much you want of your device’s capacity to create “partitions” in the app for storing content on. You can pretty much make as many partitions as you want, but it’s not recommended due to the fact that it might make your device slow and you don’t want to use too much of your device’s capacity. It has 3 different modes to offer: “Default” mode, “Drive Only” mode (which allows the driver only) and lastly “Drive + iTunes” (which allows you to use the driver and iTunes on your computer). It has been reported that the “Drive + iTunes” mode might make your iTunes not work properly but it’s only temporary. It is also recommended to read the documentation about the modes yourself.

DeepEnd is a cool little jailbreak tweak which adds a 3D effect to your iPhone 4′s homescreen wallpaper. DeepEnd was coded by well known developer Ryan Petri.

DeepEnd works by using your iPhone 4′s gyroscope to change your iPhone’s screen orientation based on the angle you hold your device, creating a 3D effect to your homescreen wallpaper! Remember, you will need a jailbroken iPhone 4 or other supported iDevice in order to install this!!

You may be asking, “What’s the big deal about this tweak?” Well, it makes a 3D effect on your homescreen wallpaper (which, in my opinion, is pretty cool) and….. it’s free! Download it in Cydia by adding the following repo to your sources: http://rpetri.ch/repo/

Sony Files Temporary Restraining Order Against Geohot

You will likely remember our recent article where we saw GeoHot discussing his legal issues with Sony on Attack Of The Show. Yes, it seems that Sony has filed a temporary restraining order against the notorious hacker George Hotz a.k.a Geohot.

Apparently, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California granted Sony’s request for a temporary restraining order which forbids Geohot and fail0verfl0w from distributing the jailbreak for Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. Initially it was rejected over a jurisdictional issue since the case was supposedly filed in the wrong place, but once that was resolved the TRO was back on the table. In addition to no longer distributing the jailbreak, they cannot help others with jailbreaking share information found while hacking their PlayStation products. But it gets worse…

What’s even worse is that Geohot and fail0verfl0w have also been ordered to hand over to Sony’s lawyers any computers that were used to create the jailbreak. This doesn’t necessarily mean Sony has won the case, but it’s not looking too good for the teams at this point. Of course, this won’t stop the PlayStation 3 jailbreak as it’s already being posted all over the internet by other people. With Geohot and fail0verfl0w losing some of their technology, how do you think this will affect future jailbreaking projects for both teams? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out for ourselves…

A very simple and sleek iPad home screen setup

What you’re looking at is a screenshot of my iPad with its new home screen setup. Of course, I’m jailbroken, so I get a lot of cool extra goodies. Full information after the break.First, the lock screen! There’s nothing special here, except for the slide-to-unlock bar has now been extended all the way across the screen. At the moment of writing this post, I don’t have this installed anymore because it’s quite annoying.

The wallpapers are called “Elemental Flow” by Nemed on deviantART. It’s a very simple wallpaper that’s available in both red and blue flavors. They also come in a number of resolutions, including copies for the iPad and iPhone 4. I’m using the “Fire” wallpaper on my home screen, and the “Water” wallpaper on my lock screen. I can swap these whenever I’d like.

The home screen has no icons in the actual page. Everything is kept in the dock, thanks to FolderEnhancer (available in Cydia for a couple of bucks), which really lets you use Folders the way they meant to be. That’s about it. Oh! For the carrier, I didn’t use MakeItMine or any special app. I simply edited the K48AP.plist file located in /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/.

Animate Your SpringBoard With Barrel

Barrel is a really neat jailbroken mod that I recently found out about. It’s $2.99 in Cydia, and allows you to add cool little transitions when you flip through your SpringBoard pages. Read on to see if it’s worth the money.

When you download the application, you get (as usual with small tweaks like this) an entry in your device’s Settings application. So, when you go into Settings and tap on Barrel, you are presented with a little preliminary screen showing you what effect you currently have set. When you tap on that, you get all the choices of effects you can set. At the top is normal (no effects), which is what you usually have. Just a simple side-to-side animation when swiping through your homescreen pages. Below that you have cube (inside). This one is really neat, and the name should give you an idea of what it does. If you’re following along and you’ve downloaded the application, even better. Just select it, return to your SpringBoard, and swipe between pages. No need to respring or anything.

Since the rest of the process is pretty simple, I’ll just give a brief description for each:

Normal: normal [duh]
Cube (inside): inside cube [duh]
Cube (outside): opposite of above
Page slide down: pages fade and fly in from bottom corners
Page slide up: opposite of above
Curl and roll away: All of your apps form into a circle, mix up, then return to normal grid layout

Curl and roll away is by far the most crazy. A bit too extreme for me. I like cube outside the best.

So, that’s about it for Barrel. Very simple little tweak. They are adding more animations, apparently curl and roll away is the newest. For now though, I wouldn’t recommend dropping $3 on this, as it’s kind of a novelty. Sure it’s cool, but it really doesn’t do much. Maybe it’ll be worth it when they add more animations. For now though, unless money is burning a hole in your pocket or you are crazy about little animations like this, I think your money is better spent eleswhere. If I had $3, I would take a nice lunch at McDonalds over some cute little SpringBoard animations. But that’s just my opinion. You might want to check out some videos of this one before you buy.

RetinaPad for iPad – 2x the way it’s meant to be

The first that came to mind? “WOW”. Ryan Petrich’s latest hack for jailbroken iPads is “RetinaPad”. It’s $2.99 in Cydia, and it basically allows you to run apps in pixel-doubled mode the way they’re meant to be. If an app contains retina-display graphics, then RetinaPad will allow you to use those graphics instead of the standard pixel-doubling method. This allows for crystal clear images and text. What about regular apps? Those are going to look great as well. We have several before and after comparisons after the break!Here’s a quick look at RetinaPad’s settings in the stock Settings application:

Jailbreak ALL iDevices (UNTETHERED) with redsn0w 0.9.7b1 for iOS 4.2.1 – READ FIRST!

Earlier today, the iPhone Dev-Team released the first beta of redsn0w 0.9.7 (for Mac OS X). This new beta will allow users to run an untethered jailbreak on ALL iOS devices running iOS 4.2.1. If you don’t know what untethered means, please click here to understand the difference between tethered and untethered. How-to and downloads after the break.

BEGIN IMPORTANT NOTE

This jailbreak is nowhere near complete. Users who plan on trying this on devices that they use daily may want to hold off. Why? There are LOTS of problems with this jailbreak, all of which the Dev-Team should have sorted out within a week or two.

What are the problems, you ask?

Bringing up the multitasking dock results in a respring.
Playing ANY music at all results in a respring or app crash.
Bluetooth is completely disabled.
YouTube app crashing.
Videos aren’t playing.
Chances of having to restore from scratch.
AirPlay doesn’t work.

ALSO! Your SHSH blobs for 4.2b3 will need to be on file in Cydia. If you’re currently jailbroken (hopefully you are), open up Cydia, and make sure you see “4.2b3″ at the top of your screen. If you don’t, then wait for the official jailbreak.

The tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 has been out for quite some time, and works just fine. If you ABSOLUTELY MUST BOOT UNTETHERED, then go ahead.

So… If you’re a tinkerer and don’t mind missing out on some core functionality and don’t mind restoring and losing all of your data, then go for it.

END IMPORTANT NOTE

You’re going to need to download a couple of things:

Just download the first 2 to your computer. For usbmuxd, you’ll have to do some setting up. Once you get the software installed and running, run ./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222. Run this command before following the actual steps below. You might also need to chmod +x tcprelay.py first (to make it executable).

Once you’ve got everything ready to go, simply:

Open redsn0w 0.9.7b1
Browse for your iOS 4.2.1 IPSW
Check the “Jailbreak Monte (untether)” box, and nothing else (assuming you’re already jailbroken… If you’re not, just check the first box, and when that’s all done, check just the second box).
Follow the on-screen prompts.

That’s about it! You should be in iOS 4.2.1 (untethered). Tired of the bugs? We told you so. Just wait for the final jailbreak to come out, hopefully within the next couple of weeks.

iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak taking longer than expected?

While comex’s latest tweet doesn’t surprise me, I sort of expected it. Apple is getting better and better at patching up certain exploits and making things harder for iDevice hackers.A few weeks ago, it was said that the untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak (and the updated ultrasn0w with iPhone 4 support) would both be released before Christmas, which is only a few days away.

While the actual details of this delay are unknown, we’ll never know when or if it’ll come. We also don’t know if comex is just playing around, or if he really is having troubles.

But, if comex really is having problems, we could always rely on geohot!

Enable the Usage menu on iPad and iPod Touch

Apple, for whatever reason, decided that the iPod Touch and iPad shouldn’t get the Usage menu in Settings>General. This is something that’s only available to iPhone users (of course, a jailbreak says otherwise). The Usage menu is useful because it gives you some nifty battery life information. This post will tell you how to easily enable this feature on a jailbroken iPad or iPod Touch.

First, you’ll need iFile. We’ll be using it to open up a few .plist files so that we can access the usage menu.

BUT, if you’re on an iPad, I went ahead and uploaded the 2 modified .plist files for ease-of-use. Just extract the two .plist files over to /Applications/Preferences.app. DOWNLOAD HERE

General.plist in iFile.

Using iFile, navigate to /Applications/Preferences.app/. Open up General.plist. Look for “USAGE”. Remove the “requiredCompatibilities” for the USAGE area (see the screenshot above).

Usage Statistics.plist in iFile.

Next, open up “Usage Statistics.plist”, also located in Preferences.app (see the screenshot above). Do the same thing for “USAGE_HEADER”, “USAGE_ELAPSED”, and “STANDBY_ELAPSED”.

Finally, open up Settings, go into General, and you should now see the Usage menu. Leave any questions or comments down below if you need help.

Fix the gsc.wildcat error with FullForce for iPad in Cydia

Many iPad users are having problems with installing FullForce onto their devices in Cydia, where they’ll get some sort of “gsc.wildcat” dependency error. Luckily, I was able to figure out how to get around this (my iPad’s running iOS 4.2.1, jailbroken of course), as I haven’t been able to find any sort of fix online. This fix is VERY easy and VERY quick.

So, open up Cydia on your jailbroken iPad, and install iFile (if you don’t already have it). Next, open iFile, and navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app, and open “K48AP.plist” using iFile’s property list viewer/editor. Look at the screenshot below, and add a new key called “wildcat”, and make it true. Save the file, reboot your device, and try the install again.

There you have it! A quick and simple fix to a problem that oh-so many people seem to be having.

ALSO! Double check to make sure you have the same exact formatting. Failing to do so will make the .plist file useless and your device probably won’t boot (but you should be able to fix it without a restore thanks to afc2 filesystem access). You may also want to try using a property list editor on your computer to make the appropriate changes.

Difference between untethered, tethered, and semi-tethered

A lot of people recently are confused as to what the difference is between a tethered, untethered, and semi-tethered jailbreak. iOS 4.2.1 is somewhat of a challenge for hackers, but the dark side always wins. This post will easily explain what these three things mean and how they may be important to you.

iOS 4.2.1 is in fact jailbroken, but it is a semi-tethered jailbreak for most newer devices.

Untethered

An untethered jailbreak is where you can reboot your device without having to worry about it not booting up again.

Tethered

A tethered jailbreak means you have to plug your device into your computer and re-run some jailbreaking software to get your iDevice up and running again. Failing to do so will leave your device at the “connect to iTunes” screen.

Semi-tethered

A semi-tethered jailbreak is where you’ll be able to reboot your device without needing a computer, but 99% of jailbreak related hacks, mods, and applications won’t work at all. BUT, sometimes your device may just get stuck at an Apple logo because of some problems with MobileSubstrate extensions. If this is the case, you’ll have to plug your iDevice into your computer and re-run some jailbreaking software to get everything going again.

Currently, the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for the iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS (new-bootrom), iPod Touch 3G/4G/MC is semi-tethered, so you’ll be able to boot it just fine (as long as you aren’t using MobileSubstrate) without the need of a computer.

App Locket: Keep Your iOS Apps Secure

AppLocket is a jailbroken mod available in Cydia that adds a configurable passcode to certain applications on your iDevice. It’s $1.99 and installs as a little pane in the Settings application, as is the trend these days (very few Cydia packages actually install as apps anymore.) I’d say $1.99 is a fair price for what this app does.

In the settings pane, you can set which apps you want to lock, as well as how you want to activate the locking.

If you go to ‘Locked Apps’ you’ll have to enter your password. Now, the default password is ‘alpine’ which took me a while to figure out. I actually ended up Googling it to find the answer. Only later did I discover that there was a conveint little section in the Settings called ‘Tutorial’. This is a screen which tells you the basics and also the default password, which happens to be ‘apline’.

Once you’ve overcome that obstacle, you should find a screen where you have most of your settings. Here you can change a password, set your apps to locked or unlocked, toggle a numeric password, and so forth. Switching ‘Lock Apps’ to On will simply lock your apps, asking for a password for the ones you have specified. Speaking of that, there is big list of all the applications you have just below the main options. These are conveintly grouped by stock apps, App Store apps (ones you’ve downloaded) and folders. Yes, you can even lock entire folders, which I think is pretty cool. I didn’t notice this at first, because I didn’t scroll all the way down.

Once you’ve gone through all those settings, you’re pretty much good to go. All you need to do now is set your activation (how you want to toggle app locking.) I think that when you download AppLocket, you also download Activator, but I can’t be sure. Anyway, you probably know about Activator. It’s only one of the most awesome mods you can get. Here it’ll let you set what gesture or button combination activates locking. I have mine set to holding on the status bar, which seems to work well. The app will also alert you if there is any conflict between gestures. (maybe you already assigned an action to holding down on the status bar).

So there you go! Those are the settings for the app, and if you do the gesture you assigned, you should get a pop-up saying your apps are locked. If you tap on one, you’ll have to enter your password, and you’re in. This is one time only, so if you exit back to your SpringBoard and try to go back in, you’ll be prompted for your password. If you want to unlock all of your apps at once, just do the gesture you set and enter your password.

That’s about it for AppLocket! Just a simple little $2 app that can prove very useful if you lend your phone to a lot of people (like me) or if you’re just paranoid. Have fun, and don’t forget your password!

With more and more people jumping on the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak bandwagon, there are a few small tweaks to Cydia that have been made. A lot of bugs have been fixed, and there have been some nice UI changes.

Below is a gallery of the way Cydia looks and acts on a jailbroken iPad running iOS 4.2.1 (jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.6b4).

You’re probably asking how well the jailbreak currently is while on an iPad running iOS 4.2.1. It’s not that bad! A lot of MobileSubstrate extensions work just fine, such as SBSettings and WinterBoard. I have had some problems with qTweeter constantly crashing SpringBoard, but that’s one of the risks that you take when becoming an early jailbreak adopter.

Froyo on your iPhone without a computer

While some Android devices are still waiting to get their dedicated version of Froyo, it looks like the original iPhone and iPhone 3G have received theirs. With the help of Bootlace you can install Android 2.2.1 on the iPhone without the need to even use a computer. While you could install Android before, Bootlace just made it that much easier for us.

To get it running you need the following:

Original iPhone running 3.1.2 or 3.1.3
iPhone 3G running 3.1.2 through 4.1

FaceIt 3GS brings FaceTime to iPhone 3GS

Feeling a bit jealous that your friend can FaceTime and you can’t? Missing a loved one off at college and want to seem? If you got yourself a jailbroken iPhone 3GS then you can add yourself to the FaceTime crowd. Using Faceit-3GS you can make and receive FaceTime calls from any other FaceTime capable device. Of course there is no front-facing camera on the iPhone 3GS but maybe you don’t care. If you’ve just been itching for this feature then head on over your local Cydia store and download it right away.

Which jailbreaking tool should YOU use?

Jailbreaking can become a very confusing task when it comes to choosing which jailbreaking tool you should use. There are a number of them available: limera1n, greenpois0n, redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool, and jailbreakme.com. Which should you use? What are the pros/cons for each? How does unlocking come into play?

There are a few different types of jailbreaks: On-the-fly, and Custom IPSW

On-the-fly jailbreaks are able to jailbreak your device without any data loss or a restore. For most people, this is all you’d need. limera1n, greenpois0n, redsn0w, and jailbreakme.com can take care of this for you. Surprisingly, jailbreakme.com is the only one without a number in its name. Now, which out of these 4 things should you use?

Jailbreakme.com is made for ALL devices (excluding the Apple TV 2G) running iOS 3.1.2 through 4.0.1 (3.2 through 3.2.2 for iPad). It’s an untethered jailbreak, so you won’t have to rejailbreak your device should you restart it. Apple quickly patched the jailbreakme.com exploit, so this website is useless for newer firmwares.

limera1n (Windows/Mac OS X) and greenpois0n (Windows/Linux/Mac OS X) are 2 very lightweight tools to quickly and effortlessly jailbreak your device. Which of these 2 should you use? First, start with limera1n. It’s a 1-click-to-start jailbreak (just like greenpois0n). You’ll then have to follow a few steps to put your device into DFU mode. If you don’t know what that is, then don’t worry about it. If after you run limera1n and follow the instructions and aren’t jailbroken, then try greenpois0n. Basically, if one doesn’t work for you, try another one. There’s nothing wrong by using another one should one not work.

redsn0w is sort of like limera1n and greenpois0n, but it has a few extra options and requires a copy of the stock IPSW (firmware) file to work. If you’re on an older device, you’ll get some options to change your boot and/or recovery logo.

A custom IPSW jailbreak is where you build your own IPSW (firmware) file, and then restore to it in iTunes by shift+click (Windows) or alt/option+click (Mac OS X) on the restore button and finding your IPSW you’ve made.

PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze are 2 very similar programs. The primary differences is that one’s for Mac OS X (PwnageTool), and one’s for Windows (sn0wbreeze). These 2 programs let you add a number of different customization options for you to restore to, such as adding your own Cydia repos/packages, boot/recovery logo, unlocking options, root partition size changes, and a lot more. Only use these if you’d like to play around a bit and learn more about jailbreaking.

redsn0w 0.9.6b2 released for Windows & Mac OS X – Jailbreaks all devices, untethered

The iPhone-Dev Team has released redsn0w 0.9.6b2 for both Windows and Mac OS X. It jailbreaks all devices, and is untethered. Information, how-to, and pictures, are all after the break.

It looks like geohot’s recent limera1n exploit for iPhone3GS/iPhone4/iPad/ipt3g/ipt4g/atv2g will be very beneficial to jailbreakers and unlockers for the next few months (at least). geohot’s limera1n program and the alternative greenpois1on program both use his same exploit (although greenpois0n refuses to tell you that, FWIW), and hopefully SHAtter can be saved for some later device.

In the meantime, we’ve also incorporated the limera1n exploit into redsn0w. But we’ve added a few extras:

custom bootlogos for iPhone3G/iPhone3GS/iPod2G users (with qualifying bootroms)

an option that implements the “DFU” button in PwnageTool. This button (which you can use from Windows) lets you prepare your device for a custom DFU. Even if you’re purely a Windows user, you can get a trusted friend to run PwnageTool over your IPSW to create a custom IPSW. You can now install that custom IPSW on your own Windows box, after you run this redsn0w version.

For Windows users who have run redsn0w and chosen “Just enter pwned DFU mode right now”, your device is now completely vulnerable. Running iTunes and selecting a custom IPSW from PwnageTool (choose it by pressing Shift+Restore)….you’ve now convinced your device and iTunes to restore to a custom firmware. Congratulations!

If you are timid about software and running these programs…please just wait! Don’t jeopardize your carrier unlock for a firmware upgrade. Wait for even easier methods than this latest redsn0w release.

You can customize your jailbreak a little bit from this screen. A4 devices don't get the option for boot logos, and neither does the 3GS (new bootrom).

You're ready to put your device into DFU mode (the screen after this) to jailbreak.

There are several different jailbreaking tools available (redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool, limera1n, greenpois0n). They all will jailbreak your device just fine, but which should you use? We’ve had great success with limera1n. PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze are great alternatives if you really want to get down and dirty with your jailbreak.

Enable HD video recording for iPhone 3GS

If you own a jailbroken iPhone 3GS, then you can now enable HD video recording! Follow the simple instructions below to do it.

Instructions

Download this file.
Transfer N88AP.plist from the ZIP over to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/.
Copy the 3 remaining .plist files from the ZIP over to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/.
Reboot.

Watch the video above to see what it looks like. The results are quite good! It just went from 640×480 (3Mbps) to 1280×800 (30Mbps).

Access the entire iOS filesystem with iDOS without a jailbreak

Remember iDOS that was released earlier today? It was pulled 4~ hours later (according to @snazzyq). It turns out that, as this is an emulator, you can access whatever file on your filesystem whether or not you’re jailbroken. If you happen to have a copy of iDOS, you can run the below commands to access whatever file or directory you’d like. NOW, this isn’t of very much use, as you can’t copy or remove files/directories, but YOU CAN copy files from the filesystem over to iDOS’ Documents folder. In other words, you can read, but you can’t write.

Run the following commands in iDOS to mount the root directory as a virtual drive “D”, change directories to it, and then list everything in the root directory:

mount d /
D:
dir

You’ve now listed everything from root without being jailbroken. You can use the “copy” command to copy files from wherever you’d like on over to the Documents directory (virtual drive C) of iDOS. Run help for info on how to use other commands. You can’t remove anything. You only get read access, not write access.

iOS passcode bug – It can get worse

Everyone has probably already heard of iOS 4′s passcode bug. Basically, if you have a passcode enabled, you can gain complete access to the phone app, which let’s you view and edit contacts, check voicemail, etc. You can do this by tapping on the “Emergency Call” button, entering #### into the dial pad, and quickly pressing the physical power button IMMEDIATELY AFTER tapping on the green call button. You’ll then be presented with the stock phone app. You can’t go to your homescreen. The only way to get back to your lockscreen is to hold the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” slider shows up, and then tapping the power button. After that, you’ll go back to the phone app, but pressing the home button once will take you back. BUT, it gets worse. Suppose the person who got a hold of your phone wants to see exactly what you’ve got on there.

They can easily plug the device into their computer, jailbreak it, and then gain access to the entire filesystem without losing a thing. By using DiskAid/Total Commander/iPhone Explorer/iPhone Browser/iFunBox, one can access some of the more vital files and folders.

You don’t quite need to be jailbroken to access the filesystem. You can still use one of the above programs to gain access to the Media folder, which contains all music, photos, videos, voice memos, and more.

So basically, this passcode bug isn’t anything to be worried about, as jailbreaking is a much bigger threat when it comes to security. Apple will most likely fix this bug in iOS 4.2, but not a jailbreak fix.

ALSO! If someone really wanted to get into your contacts, they could plug the device into their computer, run a backup in iTunes, and then extract the contents of that backup using some third-party software.

PwnageTool 4.1.2 released – Jailbreak iOS 4.1 (and 3.2.2) for all devices (including Apple TV)

The iPhone-Dev Team has finally released PwnageTool 4.1.1, and Mac OS X application which lets users create their own customized IPSW file for jailbreaking and unlocking purposes. What’s cool about this latest version is that it jailbreaks a number of different devices that are running iOS 4.1. It also jailbreaks the iPad running iOS 3.2.2, and even the latest Apple TV. Download links and a how-to are after the break!

Through a combination of the recently released geohot limera1n exploit , @comex’s recently released pf kernel exploit, and our original pwnage2 exploit, PwnageTool 4.1 works untethered on these devices at firmware 4.1:

iPod touch 4G

iPod touch 3G

iPhone4

iPhone 3GS

iPhone 3G

PwnageTool allows you to restore to a custom IPSW file. For instance, you can restore to a pre-jailbroken firmware while simultaneously maintaining your current baseband (and thus your ultrasn0w carrier unlock). You can also add whatever packages you want in the “Expert” mode of PwnageTool, if you wish to pre-install Cydia packages. iPhone 3G users get the additional benefit of selecting their own boot and recovery logos, and features like multitasking and battery charge percentage.

PwnageTool’s main advantage to ramdisk-based methods (limera1n, greenpois0n, redsn0w) is for unlockers — those that need to keep their current baseband and preserve their ultrasn0w unlock. But in this new age of both bootrom- and userland-based exploits, it’s an excellent platform for continuing the jailbreak through all future firmwares. More on this later!

AppleTV 2G users: Welcome to the JB family! Right now, about all you can do is command-line stuff via ssh. You also have afc2 available, so you can use tools like ifunbox to move files around. These are the *very* early days of AppleTV 2G jailbreaking, so it’ll take some time for JB app developers to come up with methods to use your AppleTV 2G from the remote, versus the command line. PS: Your ssh password is “alpine”…please change it when you can

Expert mode: By popular demand, the IPSW file selection in Expert mode is now completely manual (doesn’t use Spotlight). Just pick your IPSW file directly instead of waiting for the Spotlight search to complete. In Expert mode, the default is to hacktivate (“Activate the iPhone”), so if you have a legit SIM card be sure to deselect that option in Expert mode.

DFU button: That “DFU” button in PwnageTool is more than it looks like. It guides you through the DFU process, but then also runs the appropriate exploit to convince your device and iTunes that all is legit. The DFU button in PwnageTool is not just your average DFU.

Hopefully what they’ve already given us is enough to give you a feel of what PwnageTool does (please read through it a few times!). So now, onto the how-to, but keep in mind that this jailbreak requires a RESTORE of the device, so everything that’s currently on it will be erased. And after the restore is done, it’s best to setup your device as a new device, instead of restoring from a backup. You may want to look into using limera1n and/or greenpois0n, as they both are able to jailbreak on-the-fly. PwnageTool is for experienced jailbreakers who knows what they’re doing.

Please refer to the image gallery below for step-by-step instructions. We find this to be more effective, rather than just listing all of the steps.

Step 15 would be to alt/option+click on the Restore button, find the custom IPSW file, and to let iTunes restore to it.

The entire IPSW creation process took 3.5 minutes on our 2009 MacBook Pro with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, and a 64GB SSD.

That’s it! PwnageTool is more “hard-core” than limera1n/greenpois0n/blackra1n/redsn0w/QuickPWN.

New PwnageTool coming today? All you need to know!

The new version of PwnageTool? Where?! Where?!?! Oh wait, the Internet! Not yet… MuscleNerd, the “leader” of the iPhone-Dev Team, has posted a tweet concerning PwnageTool. He says that, as long as there aren’t any unexpected issues with their final testing of PwnageTool, it will be released later today, so it looks as if “Funday” (usually Sunday) might be moved 5 days ahead. What’s so good about this version, and how will it influence you? Continue reading to find out!

So what’s so good about this version of PwnageTool? Well, it’ll be untethered for all supported devices running iOS 4.1/iOS 3.2.2, which includes:

iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPod Touch 2G
iPod Touch 3G
iPod Touch 4G
iPad
Apple TV 2

The only devices that aren’t compatible are the iPhone 2G (3.1.2/3.1.3 only, so you can use JailbreakMe.com) and the first generation iPod Touch (you can also use JailbreakMe.com).

What does PwnageTool do? Basically, PwnageTool lets you create your very own customized IPSW file that you can restore your device to from iTunes. Some of the customizations include boot and recovery logos, customizable root partition size, etc. You can even add your own Cydia repositories from right with PwnageTool, so that will be one less task that you may need to do after jailbreaking.

What’s the difference between PwnageTool and something lime limera1n and greenpois0n? Well, PwnageTool requires you to restore your device to a custom IPSW file. This means you will lose all of the data that’s currently on your device, so it’ll be a good idea to back it all up. The good thing about limera1n and greenpois0n is that you can jailbreak a device without requiring a restore, but the jailbreak won’t be as customizable.

MuscleNerd has posted a number of tweets hinting at a new release of PwnageTool coming this Sunday, aka “Funday”. He also says that there will be an unlock for iOS 4.2, but it won’t be released until iOS 4.2 is out, which makes sense. So, if you’re on 4.1, you’re out of luck until 4.2 comes about. This version of PwnageTool should also jailbreak the Apple TV (limera1n can already do that). More details after the jump.

How to jailbreak iPhone 3GS/4, iPod Touch 3G/4G, iPad (4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2/4.1) – limera1n by geohot

So earlier today, geohot released his limera1n jailbreak. It’s like a mix of blackra1n and redsn0w. It’s an on-the-fly jailbreak, which means you don’t have to restore your device to a custom IPSW file. It does require you to manually put your device into DFU mode, which is easy and is straightforward. It takes about 5 minutes (from start to finish) to complete, primarily because of the reboots. This jailbreak is made by geohot, and is sort of a mix between blackra1n and redsn0w (it’s 1-click to get it started, but you need to go into DFU mode which is explained in limera1n). How-to

After downloading and opening limera1n, click on “make it ra1n”.
Follow the prompts to put your device into DFU mode. If you messup, simply close limera1n, restart your device, and try again.
After the jailbreak process is complete, you’ll have to manually turn your device on.
After a few reboots, you should see a new “limera1n” app on your homescreen. Open this.
Install Cydia.

That’s it! It takes maybe 4 minutes (because of the abnormally long reboots) to complete. I’ve done this on my iPhone 4 running a brand new install of iOS 4.1, and it all works just fine!

limera1n + cydia =

What really happened to geohot

Update… As most of you probably know, geohot has released his limera1n jailbreak, which works. This post is irrelevant and stupid .

So here’s the deal. A few months ago, I was told by someone (lets just say that he isn’t very liked anymore and could have lied when he told this to us) that geohot has left the scene to go work for Apple to patch as many exploits as possible. Is this true? I don’t know, but it’s always plausible. Geohot left the scene on July 13th, 2010. Four and a half months earlier, he created limera1n.com (at least according to its WhoIs results).

Yesterday, Friday the 8th, @p0sixninja “confirmed” that geohot is making a return.

Anyway, what has geohot been doing since he left? He could possibly have been at Apple, looking at various pieces of source code, and trying to patch all of the possible exploits.

It’s currently rumored (or confirmed?) that geohot will be releasing his “limera1n” jailbreak on Monday, one day after the expected release of the “greenpois0n” jailbreak. What will geohots supposed “jailbreak” do? Nobody knows just yet (or at least anyone in the general public doesn’t, but maybe someone internally knows exactly what’s going on).

What could it possibly do?

Geohot could be releasing limera1n so that it permanently prevents your device from being jailbroken. As he might know how all of the exploits work, he himself can probably get them all patched. This could possibly “jailbrick” your device.

Keep in mind that this is all speculation, and since nobody knows exactly what will be happening, this could all potentially by possible. It’s certainly possible, as there’s nothing really from keeping this from being true. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The best thing to do, should limera1n really be released, is to stay away from it until the iPhone Dev Team has had some testing with it. Twitter: 1 | 2

iPod Touch 4G (and iPhone 4) jailbroken with SHAtter

The iPhone-Dev Team has posted a teaser video of an iPod Touch 4G running Cydia and a battery percentage mod. They’ve created a beta version of PwnageTool, which allowed them to successfully restore to a custom IPSW file in iTunes. Video after the jump.

So, what does this mean to you? The iPod Touch 4G, running iOS 4.1, has been jailbroken. This method also works on the iPhone 4. The Dev Team is working on “faster tools”, which seems to me as if an updated version of redsn0w will be available soon, allowing users to jailbreak without restoring to a custom IPSW file.

Earlier tonight, ih8sn0w has updated his line of jailbreaking application, including sn0wbreeze, which has been updated to version 2.0 which supports various iOS 4.0 firmwares. All information and a quick how-to guide are all after the break.

SN0WBREEZE 2.0 IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE IPHONE 4!

If you’ve ever heard of PwnageTool, this is basically the Windows equivalent of that app (although they are made by 2 different developers).

sn0wbreeze 2.0 is compatible with the following firmwares:

4.0.1
4.0.2
4.1

sn0wbreeze 2.0 is compatible with the following devices:

iPhone 2G (3.1.2 or 3.1.3 only, for obvious reasons)
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)
iPod Touch 1G
iPod Touch 2G (non-MC)

Basically, sn0wbreeze takes in a stock compatible IPSW file, and mingles with it to create a customized IPSW that is jailbroken for a specific devices and firmware. You can then restore to this custom IPSW file in iTunes. This is considered an “advanced” jailbreak method, but works fine.

[HOW TO] Add a panoramic view to your iPhone’s Homescreen

Panorama is a nice little paid tweak from Cydia, so you need a jailbroken device for this.

What Panorama does is give you the ability to have panoramic Homescreen wallpaper, ie: the wallpaper will scroll along as you move through pages (kind of like the Zune HD).

The scroll sensitivity can be set as desired, so you can have the wallpaper move significantly or just a bit when you flick through your homescreen icons. Panorama has other nice features like changing the transparency of the dock, icons and icon labels, etc…
This tweak has no icon. You can find it in the Settings.app.

To make it work, you need a wallpaper image of size 2MB or greater (so that it spreads over a few Homescreen pages). I use google images and click option ‘Larger than..2MB’ on the left. Save the image you like to photo library on your device.

Now go to Settings.app, scroll down to Panorama and tap Photo library to choose your wallpaper (again, larger than 2MP). Also make sure Enabled is ON.

There you have it. A wallaper that moves as you move through pages!

How do you stream music on your iDevice?

Personally, I hate having to deal with iTunes every time I want to add a song or two to my iPhone. Specially when I’m not near my macbook. And I’m sure many of you always look around for ways to stream or listen to songs you don’t already have on your iDevice. Here are a few ways I found very useful to do so.

1- Internet radio, like Pandora. The problem with this app (or similar apps) is that you can’t save (download) the songs you stream, and therefore can’t play them when you’re out of 3G or wifi range. I usually use Pandora only to introduce me to new songs.

The next 2 methods require a jailbroken device.

2- Download the song you want!
First you need to install iFile via cydia, that’s if you don’t already have it. Then you need Safari Download Manager from cydia as well. It lets you download all kinds of file types right from Safari on your device. They’re a few dollars altogether but worth every single penny!
Now you’re ready! All you have to do is go to a site like 4shared (or other) in Safari on you device, search for a song and download it! Now you always have it on your device in iFile (/var/Mobile/Media/Downloads).

3- This one’s my favorite. Use Yourtube (or Yourtube2 for iOS4), paid tweak through cydia. This tweak allows you download videos in the Youtube.app on your device.

But that’s not it! The most amazing feature about it is that it lets you export/add these downloaded videos to your iPod Video Library (Music Player app). This feature is expected to come soon to Safari and Mail!

Now you can create playlists on your iDevice’s native music player that contain songs you already have in your Library AND [music] videos you just downloaded on the go.

[HOW TO] Change color of homescreen Apps (icons) names

If you’re like me, constantly jumping from theme to theme on your iPhone because you get bored easily, this one’s for you.

Here’s a very quick and simple method that allows you to change the custom ‘white’ app names under all of your your homescreen icons/folders (Phone, Mail, Messages, etc…) to pretty much any color you want!

Here’s an example:

Tested on iPhone 4, but it should work on all jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch’s.

All you need is Winterboard (obviously) and iFile, a really useful and must-have app. It’s a few bucks in Cydia (with trial), and is good for anyone who jailbreaks their device.

1 – Open iFile and navigate to /var/stash/Themes/No Undocked Icon Labels
2 – Open Info.plist
3 – Change ‘transparent’ to any color (red, green, yellow, pink…)

4 – Save and exit
5 – Open Winterboard and make sure No Undocked Icon Labels is checked
6 – Respring and you’re ready to go. All app names are now in the color you wanted!

You can also do it by SSH’ing via WinSCP/Cyberduck or DiskAid and modifying the same Info.plist.

DisplayOut is a really nifty jailbroken app that lets you mirror your iDevice’s screen on an external monitor or television. Here’s how to do it.

First, you’ll need a couple things:

A jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (the app is compatible with all models)
iPad VGA cable or an Apple AV cable
The package from Cydia (it’s $1.99)

For the cables, Apple sells them on their website, in their stores, and even at authorized 3rd party stores. They sell two kinds of AV cables: component and composite. The component cable gets you slightly better quality, and it costs the same, so if your TV has component inputs, go for it (you’ll find them as red, blue, and green jacks on the back of your monitor.) don’t have component inputs, you likely still have a composite input (single yellow jack.) If you have an iPad or iPhone 4, you can also choose to use the iPad VGA out cable. This is more likely to allow you to connect to computer monitors.

Once you have your cable, you can go into Cydia on your jailbroken device and search ‘DisplayOut.’ This will bring you to the package, which is two bucks. If you’ve already gone to the trouble of buying a $30-$50 cable, I’m assuming $2 can’t seem that bad. Go ahead and buy it, and it will be installed in your Settings app. The settings are really simple, so just go ahead and connect your device to your cable, which should be connected to your desired monitor. Make sure it’s enabled, and you should have a pretty nice picture of your device’s screen running on the monitor. You can then fiddle around with size and orientation, and even turn your widescreen monitor sideways if you want the springboard to look good.

That’s all you need. You’ll (hopefully) notice that it runs pretty smoothly, and that there is hardly any lag. You can still do processor-intensive tasks, and your device should hold up just fine. I have this set up with my iPhone 4 and a component cable connected to a TV, and the only problem I had was my phone crashing when I unplugged the cable. This may not happen to you but I hope they’ll fix that bug soon.

This app shows great potential. Think of the possibilities! You could have YouTube or the iPod app up on the TV at a party and the guests could come up and pick music. You could have a pass-the-device game of Monopoly, but with people watching the game on the big screen. With the VGA Connector, you could hook up your iPad/iPhone 4 to a projector! Also some projectors have composite/component AV inputs, so it should work with all models. This app has a lot in store and I can’t wait to see where they take it in the future.

iPod Nano Jailbreak? Who needs it…

If you know anything about jailbreaking your iOS device, you should know about Saurik. Saurik is the creator and maintainer of Cydia, the default app to download whatever onto a jailbroken device. Saurik tweeted out during September 1′s Apple event that the iPod Nano MAY be able to be jailbroken.

Now, if Saurik is being serious here, and a jailbreak is designed for the Nano, what use would it have? Sure, the Nano maybe given the ability to have (low-quality) video with a jailbreak, but there is no Wi-Fi on the Nano, and this basically renders a jailbreak useless. Even if there was Cydia on the Nano, and there was a way to SSH over applications to the Nano, what would you send over? Winterboard maybe, to enable a theme, but this would probably force the iPod to crash. Games maybe, but have fun playing anything on a 1.54 inch display with three buttons. Maybe there would be the ability for different codecs to be run on the Nano, or a tweak to allow unsupported accessories to work. But the truth is, it wouldn’t be worth the hassle for any of this. It can even be concluded that Apple has finally been able to create a “iOS’ device that will not be jailbroken. It seems that just time will tell.

To Jailbreak…or Not to Jailbreak…

When I got my iPhone 3GS I desperately wanted to jailbreak it. I loved the concepts of a customized lockscreen and themes, and that is just the beginning. I want side-loaded apps, a break from Apple’s confusing , and sometimes ridiculous, rules. Apple has not taken a very aggressive approach, but nonetheless one of my main reasons for not jailbreaking is their policy. The two things stopping me were the loss of warranty associated with jailbreaking and the occasional sluggishness of having a jailbroken device.

Enter the iPhone 4.

When I bought my iPhone 4 i immediately opted for a SquareTrade protection plan in lieu of the AppleCare plan I had on my 3GS, even at that point I had a feeling the iPhone 4 would shatter, so accidental damage protection was a must; little did i know that just one drop would ring the death toll for Apple’s new beauty. while jailbreaking is technically not covered by SquareTrade, not having to deal with Apple provided enough peace of mind for me. The next hurdle was the sluggishness of a jailbroken device. the iPhone 4 ships with Apple’s A4 processor and 512 MB of RAM. this means that even though some sluggishness is still apparent, it is nothing like the lag associated with a 3GS or more severely the 3G. Jailbreaking was finally for me.

The Experience…

Jailbreakme.com is the single easiest thing I have done on my iPhone, just point Mobile Safari to the website, slide the slider and your IOS device is jailbroken. right after I jailbroke, i launched Cydia and downloaded LockInfo and WinterBoard. I dropped all app labels, got a HTC Sense-like clock/weather widget and live happily with my jailbroken iPhone. when I stop being cheap, I fully intend to grab Wi-Fi Sync, and My Wi. My iPhone is finally free from the ridiculous App Store restrictions, yet if I want to access it I am fully able to. all of these apps/tweaks were part of my plan for a jailbroken iPhone, but something I didnt consider was the fact that the majority of paid jailbreak apps have a try before you buy feature. this is perhaps the most rewarding portion of the jailbreak for me, with developers winning me over after I let the app sit on my phone for a bit. with the recent addition of Frash to Cydia, I finally have a device that does what i want when i want it to, whether Apple likes it or not, this is the iPhone I have always dreamed of.

Summary

Overall jailbreaking has been an amazing experience for me, unlocking features for my phone that I had previously convinced myself I didn’t need, such as tethering and Flash support. I can send/receive texts from wherever I am in my phone, check email from the lockscreen, and play some flash games. Apple has a laughably terrible notification system, lack of app side-loading, and a rapid developer base. Jailbreaking brings all of these features together to make something that is truly worthy of the $300 I spent and the top smartphone crown.

Apple plans to kill jailbreaking with new patent

Apple is, once again, going to attempt to kill jailbreaking and other forms of iHacking. In a patent that was filed in February (which was just published on Thursday), Apple aims to protect Apple’s devices against “unauthorized users of an electronic device”. Sounds good, right? Well, this is basically going to kill jailbreaking, unlocking, iDroid, and all of those sorts of fun and worthwhile things.

More specifically, the patent describes the identification of “hacking, jailbreaking, unlocking, or removal of SIM card”. Should this happen to a device, sensitive information that is stored on the hacked device will be uploaded to Apple’s “secure” server, and then the hacked device can be remotely erased. This is somewhat of a major security and privacy breach. Also included in the patent is some information regarding the camera, where it can take a picture, have it geotagged, have it uploaded to Apple’s servers, and then have it erased.

Apple’s move here is rather immature. As said in the past, this is our device, therefore we should do what we please with it. Apple apparently wants to protect their device so that people are restricted to only using what Apple allows them to use.

“An activity that can detect an unauthorized user can be any action that may indicate the electronic device is being tampered with by being, for example, hacked, jailbroken, or unlocked. For example, a sudden increase in memory usage of the electronic device can indicate that a hacking program is being run and that an unauthorized user may be using the electronic device.”

Lets think about that last paragraph for a second. How often are iDevice stolen? Probably quite a bit. How often are they hacked so that they can steal information that’s already most likely encrypted by the respective application? Pretty unlikely.

This raises a lot of red flags to people who are concerned over their security, as a simple 3D game can “sudden[ly] increase memory usage”, thus sending Apple the magic signal. Now, Apple has probably already thought about that as a potential problem, and will find a way to work around legitimate memory increases.

Keep in mind that this patent may be denied, as jailbreaking (and general hacking) for “educational purposes” has been deemed as legal by the US Government.

2 great Frash test SWFs

Awesome iPhone 4 setup: Homescreen, Lockscreen, SBSettings

A lot of people have been asking me about my lockscreen, as well as the SBSettings theme that I’m using. It’s really simple, so I figured I could just make a quick blog post about it. I’ll also post the wallpapers that I’m using for my homescreen and lockscreen. Not only that, but I’ll show you the SBSettings theme that I’m using. It’s really beautiful and simple. Everything here is free, or at least has a free trial.

Homescreen

First, the homescreen. There’s nothing much to it. It’s just using the below wallpaper. The custom AT&T carrier logo is “AT&T Carrier Logo iPhone 4″ (free) in Cydia.

Lockscreen

Time to get down to business. The primary “thing” here is called “LockInfo”. It lets you view a bunch of different thing from right on your lockscreen. You can get a free 2-week trial in Cydia, but after that, it’s $4.99. LockInfo is well worth that price. I also using the HTC Weather widget (free) from Cydia. The “Tap to Unlock” button is an unreleased package by Lynden Dunn. It’s just a modified version of the “A Better Tap To Unlock” package from Cydia, but modified so that’s it’s nice and clear for the iPhone 4. It should be available in Cydia sometime next week. That’s basically all there is to my lockscreen. Oh, the wallpaper! You can find it below. It’s called “Leaves at Lynn Canyon Park“. I found it on Interfacelift.com, the best website for awesome wallpapers. You can find just the wallpaper below.

SBSettings

I have one more thing to show you, and it’s about the SBSettings theme that I’m using. If you’re unfamiliar with SBSettings, it’s a free and must-have mod from Cydia. After sliding left-right/right-left on the status bar, down comes a nice panel of different toggles to play around with. Not only that, but SBSettings can do a lot of other things, such as respring your device, go into Safe Mode, and a lot more. The theme that I’m using is called “Mac OS X SBS HD”. You can get it for free in Cydia. This is by-far the best looking theme for SBSettings that I’ve seen ever since SBSettings was released over a year ago. It’s really beautiful.

[How-To] Flash on iPhone 4

Flash on iPhone 4 is here! It’s still pre-alpha code, so some crashes should be expected, but it works VERY well. The good thing about Flash on the iPhone 4 (actually called Frash), is that none of the Flash content will load until you tell it to (by just tapping on it). Props to @atomicmufin for compiling the code and putting everything into a nice .deb. Instructions and download after the jump.

Your iPhone 4 first needs to be jailbroken. It can be on either 4.0 or 4.0.1. To jailbreak, simply go to http://jailbreakme.com using MobileSafari on the actual device. After that, go ahead and download the DEBIAN package for Frash here. Download this to the desktop on your computer. Then, using a program like DiskAid or iPhoneBrowser, transfer the .deb file to your device (/var/mobile/). Finally, use iFile (available in Cydia) to install the .deb. Just navigate to /var/mobile/ with iFile, tap on the .deb file, and tap on “Installer”. Alternately, you can transfer the .deb file to /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall/, and restart your phone twice.

Congrats! Flash is now on your iPhone 4. You can now navigate to a webpage with Flash content, and tap on “Flash” to actually get that content going.

[How-To] Jailbreak your iPhone 4 (4.0/4.0.1)

The iPhone Dev Team have finally released their iPhone 4 unlock. It supports baseband 1.59.00 (iPhone 4 on 4.0/4.0.1). The unlock also supports the iPhone 3G & 3GS running any version of iOS 3 or 4 (basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04). The unlock is ultrasn0w version 1.0-1. You basically jailbreak your iPhone 3G, 3GS, or 4, add repo666.ultrasn0w.com to your list of Cydia sources, install ultrasn0w, and use your new SIM. There still is no way of hacktivating an iPhone 4 (because the jailbreak uses MobileSafari), but that should come eventually, so for now, you need to use an official SIM to at least get the iPhone 4 kicked out of emergency mode.

Step-by-step instructions:

Jailbreak your iPhone by going to http://jailbreakme.com on your device’s copy of MobileSafari.
Once jailbroken, open up Cydia.
Go to Manage>Sources>Edit>Add. Add http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com.
Search for “ultrasn0w”.
Install ultrasn0w.

After it’s installed, you can immediately enter your new microSIM card and begin using that network.

FaceTime via 3G (iPhone 4): Roller Coaster!

Yup! I just got my 32GB iPhone 4 yesterday, jailbroke it right after, and awaited for some way of using FaceTime via 3G. A day later, My3G came out. Available for $3.99 via Cydia or Rock (free 10-day trial available), My3G allows you to use basically anything via 3G, even if the application specifically requires Wifi. While at Disney’s California Adventure, I decided to FaceTime while on a ride. The ride? California Screamin’, a decent roller coaster with 1 inversion. I (@besweeet), via 3G, FaceTimed with @branden3112 (who was also on 3G), who also recorded everything with his camera. Check the video out after the jump.

I didn’t know I was covering up the lens until 10 seconds into the ride, but everything after that was pretty good. Everything seemed fine via 3G.

It’s SUPER easy, takes a few minutes, and can be done on EDGE, 3G, or Wifi (I did this on 3G with no problems). No computer (or even a reboot) is required. It’s also untethered for all devices! Steps:

On your device, go to MobileSafari.
Go to the following URL: http://jailbreakme.com
Slide the slider at the bottom that says “Slide to Jailbreak”.
Your device will now download Cydia, and will jailbreak itself.

That’s it! Enjoy!

Unlock

If you’d like to unlock your iPhone 4, 3GS, or 3G running one of the above firmwares, you can easily unlock it (for use on another SIM-based carrier) with ultrasn0w. For the iPhone 2G, you’ll need to use BootNeuter. Google it . Steps:

Open Cydia, and go to the Manage tab at the bottom.
Tap on Sources, then Edit>Add.
Enter the following: repo666.ultrasn0w.com
After it’s finished adding the source, go back to Sources, and then tap on the ultrasn0w repo.
Tap on ultrasn0w, and then tap on the install button. This will install ultrasn0w. Please respring after installing.

You can now insert your new SIM card and use your iPhone on your carrier of choice.

Jailbreaking/Rooting now made legal

Today is a good day for jailbreakers (iOS) and rooters (Android/webOS) alike. The Library of Congress has added an exception to the DMCA, which makes jailbreaking (and rooting…) legal. Now may give Apple a new reason to make jailbreaking harder, but this is definitely a big win . Full details after the jump.

So basically:

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

Usually, if you take your jailbroken device to Apple for repair or diagnosis, they’ll instantly deny you. Now, they have to service your device. This is a big slap in the face for Apple. Check out the full press release below. It’s pretty long.

Statement of the Librarian of Congress Relating to Section 1201 Rulemaking

Section 1201(a)(1) of the copyright law requires that every three years I am to determine whether there are any classes of works that will be subject to exemptions from the statute’s prohibition against circumvention of technology that effectively controls access to a copyrighted work. I make that determination at the conclusion of a rulemaking proceeding conducted by the Register of Copyrights, who makes a recommendation to me. Based on that proceeding and the Register’s recommendation, I am to determine whether the prohibition on circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works is causing or is likely to cause adverse effects on the ability of users of any particular classes of copyrighted works to make noninfringing uses of those works. The classes of works that I designated in the previous proceeding expire at the end of the current proceeding unless proponents of a class prove their case once again.

This is the fourth time that I have made such a determination. Today I have designated six classes of works. Persons who circumvent access controls in order to engage in noninfringing uses of works in these six classes will not be subject to the statutory prohibition against circumvention.

As I have noted at the conclusion of past proceedings, it is important to understand the purposes of this rulemaking, as stated in the law, and the role I have in it. This is not a broad evaluation of the successes or failures of the DMCA. The purpose of the proceeding is to determine whether current technologies that control access to copyrighted works are diminishing the ability of individuals to use works in lawful, noninfringing ways. The DMCA does not forbid the act of circumventing copy controls, and therefore this rulemaking proceeding is not about technologies that control copying. Nor is this rulemaking about the ability to make or distribute products or services used for purposes of circumventing access controls, which are governed by a different part of section 1201.

In this rulemaking, the Register of Copyrights received 19 initial submissions proposing 25 classes of works, many of them duplicative in subject matter, which the Register organized into 11 groups and published in a notice of proposed rulemaking seeking comments on the proposed classes. Fifty-six comments were submitted. Thirty-seven witnesses appeared during the four days of public hearings in Washington and in Palo Alto, California. Transcripts of the hearings, copies of all of the comments, and copies of other information received by the Register have been posted on the Copyright Office’s website.

The six classes of works are:

(1) Motion pictures on DVDs that are lawfully made and acquired and that are protected by the Content Scrambling System when circumvention is accomplished solely in order to accomplish the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment, and where the person engaging in circumvention believes and has reasonable grounds for believing that circumvention is necessary to fulfill the purpose of the use in the following instances:

(i) Educational uses by college and university professors and by college and university film and media studies students;

(ii) Documentary filmmaking;
(iii) Noncommercial videos

(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

(3) Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable used wireless telephone handsets to connect to a wireless telecommunications network, when circumvention is initiated by the owner of the copy of the computer program solely in order to connect to a wireless telecommunications network and access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

(4) Video games accessible on personal computers and protected by technological protection measures that control access to lawfully obtained works, when circumvention is accomplished solely for the purpose of good faith testing for, investigating, or correcting security flaws or vulnerabilities, if:

(i) The information derived from the security testing is used primarily to promote the security of the owner or operator of a computer, computer system, or computer network; and
(ii) The information derived from the security testing is used or maintained in a manner that does not facilitate copyright infringement or a violation of applicable law.

(5) Computer programs protected by dongles that prevent access due to malfunction or damage and which are obsolete. A dongle shall be considered obsolete if it is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace; and

(6) Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format.

All of these classes of works find their origins in classes that I designated at the conclusion of the previous rulemaking proceeding, but some of the classes have changed due to differences in the facts and arguments presented in the current proceeding. For example, in the previous proceeding I designated a class that enable film and media studies professors to engage in the noninfringing activity of making compilations of film clips for classroom instruction. In the current proceeding, the record supported an expansion of that class to enable the incorporation of short portions of motion pictures into documentary films and noncommercial videos for the purpose of criticism or comment, when the person engaging in circumvention reasonably believes that it is necessary to fulfill that purpose. I agree with the Register that the record demonstrates that it is sometimes necessary to circumvent access controls on DVDs in order to make these kinds of fair uses of short portions of motion pictures.[/spoiler]

This will probably bring in a new bunch of jailbreakers, as this story is making its way around the web. If you’re on iOS 4/4.0.1, it will be best to wait for @comex’s new jailbreak to make things easier and less confusing.

iPhone 4 jailbreak release IMMINENT

@comex has just posted a tweet that makes it seem as if his iPhone 4 (plus everything else iOS 4.0/4.0.1/iPad 3.2/3.2.1 related) jailbreak will be released rather soon, quite possibly tonight! He encourages everyone to backup their SHSH blobs for their devices, should users need to downgrade. His jailbreak should be just an updated version of Spirit, so it should be 1-click. iPhone 4 unlock demoed by planetbeing

@planetbeing has posted his video demoing his carrier unlock for the iPhone 4. His version of the unlock apparently “sucks”, as it takes “5 minutes for it to run through completely”, and “definitely is not ready for release”. Check out his video after the jump.

The iPhone Dev Team is working on their own method of unlocking the iPhone 4, and then the one to use will be decided in the end.

It sounds as if there’s still a ways to go until the unlock is released, but an unlock WILL be available (eventually).

iPhone 4 Jailbroken & Unlocked – Geohot quit?

With nothing more than tweets to let the world know what’s going on, the iPhone 4 has just officially been unlocked by @planetbeing. He also used the next userland jailbreak by @comex to jailbreak his iPhone 4. All of this stuff is happening a lot faster than usual, so the release is getting closer.

First, the jailbreak. This is the userland jaiblreak by @comex. Here’s the original tweet from @musclenerd that got it all started:

With all of this jailbreak news, it should be release anytime between now and the middle of August.

So, with all of this jailbreak and unlocking news going on, it sounds like @geohot is quitting the scene, according to his abnormal barrage of tweets last night: It turns out he removed his account, so we can’t post his tweets. He ended up closing his blog to the public, where only certain people can be invited to it. Maybe he has something big planned? Maybe he really is quitting? Who knows, but it seems like the iPhone Dev team, along with @comex, @planetbeing, and @chpwn are getting it done.

iPhone 4 jailbreak – Release imminent for all iOS 4 devices?

A quick tweet by @MuscleNerd revealed that there WILL be a jailbreak for the iPhone 4 VERY soon (within a couple of week)? The jailbreak is by @comex and will be another userland jailbreak. Read the tweet after the break. It’s an interesting one that gives hope to everyone who wants to jailbreak any iDevice running iOS 4 (and unlock it!). It’ll be an all-in-one jailbreaking solution (just as before).

It will be another userland jailbreak, so it will probably be an updated version of Spirit, a one-click jailbreaking tool that works for every iDevice on 3.1.3 and is untethered. Unlocking of the iPhone 4 will probably happen soon after.

The upcoming jailbreak will also work on ANY iDevice running iOS 4 (iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 2G) and should be untethered, so that you won’t have to rejailbreak your device after turning it completely off.

ih8sn0w has released sn0wbreeze 1.6.1 for Windows (PwnageTool for 4.0, sn0wbreeze’s Mac OS X equivalent, is available here). You can jailbreak the iPhone 3GS (old bootrom, not jailbroken with Spirit), iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC model). It creates a custom already jailbroken IPSW that you can restore to from within iTunes. Instructions and download links after the jump.

Basically, you give sn0wbreeze the OFFICIAL IPSW file for iOS 4 (NOT the GM), set some options, and let it create a custom, pre-jailbroken IPSW file for you. Then, you restore to that IPSW file in iTunes. Your 3GS must already be jailbroken and not already on iOS 4.

If you don’t know whether your iPhone 3GS is on the new bootrom or not, run f0recast. If you’re on an iPhone 3G or an iPod Touch 2G (without the MC at the beginning of your model number), then you’re good to go with sn0wbreeze or redsn0w.

You can also use redsn0w (iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G) for Mac & Windows, and it doesn’t require a restore. If you’re on Mac OS X, you can also use PwnageTool.

The iPhone-Dev Team has just released PwnageTool 4.0 for Mac OS X (sn0wbreeze for 4.0, PwnageTool’s Windows equivalent, is available here). You can jailbreak the iPhone 3GS (old bootrom, not jailbroken with Spirit), iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC model). iPodOut with iOS 4

iOS 4 comes with its own iPodOut application, which lets an external accessory view and control the iPod application with a menu scheme that looks somewhat like an original iPod. How can you play with it without actually having one of these [unreleased] accessories? Check out the instructions after the jump.

The below was done on a jailbroken iPhone 3G running the iOS 4 GM candidate. The home screen wallpaper is enabled, as well as multitasking. The overall phone is somewhat slow, but it has always been slow.

You’ll need a jailbroken iOS 4 device as well as a video-out cable. I used Apple’s composite video cable.

So if you’re running a jailbroken iOS 4 device, you can go ahead and install iFile from Cydia (or, if you know how to [easily] edit a .plist file, do it your way). Go and open /Applications/iPodOut.app/Info.plist. Find where you see the “hidden” string for “SBAppTags” key. I completely removed (cut) everything from SBAppTags to the associated after the “hidden” string. You can paste this information into, for example, notes, for safe keeping. Save the file, and do a respring (SysInfoPlus or SBSettings), or do a simple reboot.

Now, run the blank iPodOut app that’s now on your SpringBoard. You can now plug your video cable into your TV, and view iPodOut. You can’t actually do anything with it. It’s basically a little novelty until we start to see some sort of accessory that takes advantage of iPodOut. If you want to view the Now Playing screen, switch to the iPod app, kill iPodOut, choose your media, then open iPodOut again. You should be able to see a “Now Playing” option. After about 10 seconds, iPodOut will automatically switch to the actual Now Playing screen.

Apple has just released iTunes 9.2 for both Mac and Windows. It contains several new features, including syncing for iOS 4, Folder management, and more. iTunes 9.2 also makes “scrolling much faster”. Read on for direct download links.

One noticeable change is that the picture of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, now has a screenshot of the homescreen. It’s not your actual homescreen, but more of the default.

Enjoy! This is for use with redsn0w or PwnageTool/sn0wbreeze, as you can use custom boot/recovery logos with them. The USB cable was taken directly from an unencrypted copy of the 3GS iOS 4 GM. To actually use these, you have to use one of the following: redsn0w, PwnageTool, sn0wbreeze. These are all tools that are used to jailbreak iDevices, and they all support flashing new boot and recovery logos. redsn0w doesn’t require a completely new restore of the firmware, but PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze do, as they both create their own custom/jailbroken IPSW files that are used to restore to a device with iTunes.

Apple has just released iOS 4 to the public. If you’ve downloaded the public release (via iTunes), you can still jailbreak it with redsn0w, but you’ll need to give redsn0w the GM IPSW (can be found here).

You can easily jailbreak your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G running the 4.0 GM, so that you can do things like enable native multitasking and add a home screen wallpaper. It’s very easy to do! It’s very simple. Download redsn0w, run it, choose the same IPSW file that you used to install the iOS 4 GM onto your device, and continue on with the jailbreak. More details after the jump.

[iOS 4] Enable multitasking & home screen wallpaper on iPhone 3G/iPod Touch 2G [UPDATED 6-10-2010]

Multitasking, home screen wallpaper, and battery percentage are all features in iOS 4 that won’t be on the iPhone 3G, and the iPod Touch 2G. BUT, a simple tweak will allow all of these to run on said devices. Instructions after the jump.

First, you need to be jailbroken. Follow our guide here on jailbreaking a iPhone 3G (4.0 GM) or an iPod Touch 2G (4.0 GM).

With the latest version of redsn0w that was updated on 6-10-2010, you can easily add multitasking and home screen wallpaper during the jailbreaking process by using redsn0w. If you’re already jailbroken, open up redsn0w and check the option that says “already pwned”, and choose the other options that you want.

How To Install

It’s quite simple. Once you’ve downloaded and installed iTunes 9.2 as well as downloading your firmware for your device, simply ALT+Click (that’s for Mac, use Shift+click for Windows) on either the “Check for Updates” button or the “Restore” button. Check for Updates will update your device to the 4.0 GM without losing a thing, while restore erases everything first. The installation process will take between 10-15 minutes.

Run iPad apps on any iPhone or iPod Touch

After reading this blog post on ModMyI about Netflix, an iPad-only app, running on an iPhone, I set out to see what else works.

It is just way too easy to get iPad apps working on some other device. This was done on an iPhone 3G running 3.1.3 (jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.4).

Disclaimer

Prerequisites

A jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch
iFile (HIGHLY recommended for changing permissions)
DiskAid, or some other form of computer->iDevice file transfer (SSH is okay)

Let’s get to it!

Download an iPad app from iTunes.
Right-click on it>Show In Finder/Explorer.
Copy this file to your desktop.
Change the extension to .zip.
Drag /Payload/_APPNAME_.app to your desktop.
With your file transfer program, transfer that to /Applications on your iDevice.
When it’s done, run iFile on your iDevice.
Go to /Applications. Tap on the blue arrow next to the app you want to run.
Change the permissions to root/wheel, RWX/RX/RX.
Go into the .app folder, and also change the apps’ executable to root/wheel, RWX/RX/RX.
Respring.
Try running the app.

Compatibility List

Alpine Crawler HD – Goes to the main menu, but doesn’t do much after that. Audio works (went from the language selection screen to the main menu – stays there). The little animation in the lower-right is smooth.
Netflix - Opens, and goes to the login screen. As I don’t have a Netflix account, I cannot go any further.
iBooks – Right after the splash screen shows up (takes about 1 second before it shows up on the screen), my iPhone instantly restarted itself.
Tap Tap Radiation – Seems to work quite well, until you choose a song. Once you do that, the app will crash.
ABC Player – Crashes right upon startup. Nothing seems to make it work.
The Weather Channel Max for iPad – Crashes right upon startup. Nothing seems to make it work.
Racecar – Crashes right upon startup. Nothing seems to make it work.
The Solitaire – Crashes right upon startup. Nothing seems to make it work.
Labyrinth 2 HD Lite – Crashes right upon startup. Nothing seems to make it work.
Copia (reader) - Loads up just fine. I don’t have an account, but this app does work.

Spirit jailbreak released – Untethered jailbreak for ALL devices (including both iPad models!)

@comex finally released his Spirit jailbreak. It’s basically an untethered jailbreak, meaning you don’t have to rejailbreak your device every time you turn it completely off. It also works on both models of the iPad. It can jailbreak 3.1.2, 3.1.3, AND 3.2 (iPad).

Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the latest firmwares.

Spirit is not a carrier unlock.

If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version.)

There is a small note if you’re jailbreaking an iPad:

Note: On iPad, all this is still sort of beta. Some packages in Cydia, not designed for iPad, might screw up your system and require you to restore. Be careful. (And no, Cydia’s appearance is not final.)

The jailbreak program is rather small, just like blackra1n. It also jailbreaks just like blackra1n (1-click, and you’re done).

So maybe it’s about time for you guys on a iPhone 3GS (on the latest bootrom) to get a little excited. The same goes for all you people on a iPod Touch 2G/3G with a MC-model number. Why? An untethered jailbreak is coming for you all on Friday.

Comex’s “Spirit” jailbreak will probably (and we say probably, as there can always be last-minute problems that can keep their release from being released) be released this Friday, the same day the iPad with 3G becomes available. The following devices are (supposedly) supported:

iPhone/iPhone3G/iPhone 3GS/iPod Touch 1G/2G (non-MC) running 3.1.3 (iPhone/iPhone 3G can already be jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.4).
iPhone 3GS containing the latest bootrom.
iPad running the 3.2 firmware.
iPod Touch 2G/3G with the MC-model number.

So pretty much every device will be covered with this jailbreak, on the latest firmware, and on the latest bootrom.

We’ll just have to wait and see! Below is a video demo of the jailbreak. It was recorded by posixninja about a month ago.

iPhone 3G with Home Screen Wallpaper

The jailbreak for iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 2 has just been released!

It currently only works for the iPhone 3G (for now), and Mac OS X (for now). This is meant just for jailbroken developers to make their jailbroken mods and apps work properly on 4.0 before the final version is released to the general public.

It’s simple. Just download redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 2 here, choose the stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file, and follow the rest of the prompts. For more information, visit this wiki page.

Decrypt & Browse the iPhone OS 4.0 File System [Win + Mac + Lin]

Decrypting and browsing the file system for iPhone OS 4.0 is very easy, and can be done on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

First, you’ll need a copy of VFDECRYPT: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux

Next, you’ll need the decryption keys.

Next, you’ll need to run the following command if you’re on Mac OS X or Linux:

./vfdecrypt -i  -o decrypted_fs.dmg -k

If you’re on Windows, run this:

vfdecrypt.exe -i  -o decrypted_fs.dmg -k

Replace with the big extracted DMG from the IPSW. Replace with the appropriate decryption key.

Running that command will spit out the decrypted DMG, which you can then mount and browse.

A lot of people have been wondering how to re-encrypt/re-compile the DMG file to put it back inside of the IPSW file. Well, you can’t easily do it. There are a lot of checks that iTunes have to conduct beforehand. The only tools that are able to modify and recompile the DMG/IPSW is PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze. Unless you know how those 2 tools work, you won’t be able to manually do this yourself. Also, those tools don’t support 4.0 beta, so don’t even bother.

iPhone OS 4.0

Apple today has unveiled iPhone OS 4.0. With it, you’ll get multitasking, home screen wallpaper, a unified inbox, and much, much more. This is the most important and biggest iPhone operating system to date. Continue reading to find out about all of the new changes.

We’ll mainly be covering the more important topics. New things, such as iAds, and the new enterprise features, will be ignored.

Multitasking

While only available to iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G (NOT the 8GB “MC” model), multitasking is finally here. It’s not true multitasking, but it’s very nice. What the OS does, is save the state of the app, similar to the way your computer goes to sleep or hibernate. It will then quickly load when you want to go back to it. Again, this is only available to iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G users (NOT the 8GB “MC” model).

Steve Jobs said that “There was no decision to make as far as multitasking. Some of the earlier hardware can’t support multitasking at all.”. Remember when he said that the iPhone 2G won’t support MMS due to hardware limitations? Well, @musclenerd proved him wrong. He’ll probably prove him wrong with native multitasking too.

VoIP

Applications, such as Skype, can now be ran in the background in the middle of a call. You can also be notified if anyone is calling you, even if the app isn’t open. Do notice, however, that the above image is on wifi, not 3G, so Apple still doesn’t allow Skype to run on anything other than wifi.

Folders

Jailbreaking makes great use of putting apps into folders for better organization. Apple has implemented folders in iPhone OS 4.0. Similar to Categories/CategoriesSB and Stacks for jailbroken devices, you can easily make folders and drag new icons into them.

Home Screen Wallpaper

Yay, another reason I don’t need to jailbreak! You can now have a wallpaper on your homescreen. Also, the dock image has been changed to the one that’s on the iPad (and Mac OS X).

Unified Inbox

While being rumored just a few weeks ago, iPhone OS 4.0 incorporates a unified inbox, where all of your email from all of your mailboxes are put into one. Some may find this to be unorganized, but some may find this useful. Now, you won’t have to go back and forth in between various screens just to check your email from a different account.

iBooks

iBooks was initially a key application on the iPad, but it’s now on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Moving on…

Game Center

Apple has introduced their own social gaming network, which is supposed to kick the crap out of current services, such as Gameloft Live!, OpenFeint, and Plus+.

When’s It Coming Out? What will it work on?

iPhone OS 4.0 is expected to be released this Summer for iPhone’s and iPod Touch’s. For the iPad, it’s expected to be released this Fall.

As for the compatible devices, it will work on everything but the original iPod Touch 1G and the original iPhone 2G, although a jailbreak may prove otherwise for both of them.

All of the features will be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G (NOT the 8GB “MC” model Touch’s). For the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G, you’ll get most of the features. One of the major one’s that are missing is multitasking.

That about does it for iPhone OS 4.0! We’re getting our hands on the developer preview that Apple sent out to developers, as well as a new SDK for the iPhone OS 4.0.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 for iPhone – Real Soundtrack Transformation

Today, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 for the iPhone and iPod Touch was released. It’s a near perfect port of the original game that was released back in 2000 (that’s 10 years ago). There’s only one real (and obvious) problem with the iPhone version: Not the original soundtrack. We sought out to fix this by implementing the original soundtrack. Full information and soundtrack download after the jump.

Before you continue reading, you must be jailbroken. If you aren’t, then you might as well go somewhere else. Why do you need to be jailbroken? You need to be able to access the already installed game directly on your device, or you need to be able to install modified IPA files (AppSync/installd patch).

So the below download includes all 15 songs from the soundtrack, but only the first 9 will be able to be played in the game (Song00.mp3 – Song08.mp3 will work, Song09.mp3-Song14.mp3 do not – it’s just the way the game was programmed – this isn’t something that can be changed without having the source files).

The music from the intro video has also been swapped out with real Rage Against the Machine song (was edited and re-rendered).

Just transfer all the files from the ZIP archive to the location of the game on your device (/var/mobile/Applications/{weird_string}/THPS2.app/).

So enjoy. If you like these songs, buy them.

SSH: Why?

This post is more specifically geared towards users of jailbroken iPhone’s and/or iPod Touch’s that rely on SSH to transfer files back and forth between their computer and their actual device.

Why are people using SSH? I really don’t get it… Using USB and programs like DiskAid, Total Commander, or iPhoneBrowser is just a lot more practical.

For one, SSH is rather slow. When transferring a bunch of files, it can just simply be pretty freaking slow. There are ways to SSH via a USB cable, but that’s maybe 2x as fast as SSH over wifi, which is still extremely slow.

Second, it’s rather inconvenient. You have to make sure your iPhone is on wifi, you have to remember its IP address, you have to make sure SSH is enabled, you have to run a SSH client (such as WinSCP or Cyberduck), you have to enter in the IP address of the device, you have to wait for it to connect, and then you can go on with your business. Using a simple program like DiskAid will eliminate 90% of those steps. Just plug in your device via USB, open up DiskAid, and you’re done! Transferring batches of files or one big one can reach speeds of 5MB/s, which is 5x faster than SSH over USB. It’s just a win-win to me.

[How-To] Run Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 on iPhone/iTouch

Not only will you be able to run Windows 95, but also Windows 3.1. The whole emulator uses the Bochs cross platform IA-32 emulator. It was ported over to the iPhone by the guys over at GooDiPhone.com. Be advised that the emulator is quite slow. While Windows 3.1 will boot up considerably faster than Windows 95 (and is faster than Windows 95), it is also rather slow. Wanna try it out? Let’s get started!

You’ll need a few things before hand:

A jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch.
MobileTerminal installed on the device.
A copy of “bochs.deb”, which you can download from the following mirrors:

MultiUpload (Direct)

Once you have those things, follow these instructions:

Transfer “bochs.deb” to /private/var/mobile.
Run MobileTerminal on your iPhone.
Type in the following:
su
alpine
dpkg -i bochs.deb
It will then install everything for you. Do this command to exit out of Terminal:
killall Terminal
Do a respring and you should notice “Bochs” on your homescreen. Start it up.

Enjoy Windows 3.1 & Windows 95 on your iPhone or iPod Touch, despite how slow it may be!
