Alright, so Greenpois0n RC5 jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 Windows version was just released! Also, some errors have been fixed from the previous RC5 release. What else is in store? Read on for more info….

Ok, so Greenpois0n can jailbreak the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch devices running on iOS 4.2.1 . Now, Greenpois0n did have a couple of errors when it was first released. The Chronic Dev Team patched those up pretty quickly though! Thanks to one of the members of the Dev Team, the Greenpois0n website is back online and is stable now as well.

Here are some things that I’ve learned from this new jailbreak:

1. If you’re currently tethered because of redsn0w jailbreak, you CAN untether using Greenpois0n with no problems or a restore at all. Just use Greenpois0n like you normally would. You won’t get the loader app but you should have Cydia already because of redsn0w. (Note: this has only been tested by me on iPhone 4 and not any other devices!!!)

2. The custom boot logo is awesome. Can’t wait to see more even though the Greenpois0n one is a little glitchy.

3. It might take it a bit when it gets to “Greenpois0n initialized”. It did that to me. Just give it a bit and it’ll start exploiting after about 10-30 seconds of waiting.

Overall, this is a really great jailbreak. Head over to http://greenpois0n.com/ now and download! Happy Jailbreaking!!!

Early morning, pre coffee, you plug in your iPhone to sync it up, a box pops up and you hit “Ok.” Three seconds later you are cursing and kicking and smacking yourself. We’ve all been there. You just accidentally hit the “Update” button in iTunes and watched as your precious device starts to update and lose it’s jailbreak. Well, now there’s a new tweak in Cydia called RecoveryGuard that blocks iTunes from updating your device! How does it work? Read more to find out…..

RecoveryGuard works a lot different than most Cydia apps out there, but then again not many Cydia apps have the purpose of what RecoveryGuard’s purpose is. RecoveryGuard, when it has been installed to your device, tricks iTunes into thinking you have the latest iOS firmware. Therefore, when you accidentally hit “Update”, a pop-up will appear from iTunes stating that you’re on the most recent version of iOS when you might be on 4.1!

So, how do you get this tweak? Well, just add the following repo to your Cydia sources, refresh and then search for RecoveryGuard (Remember, your device must be jailbroken in order to install this!!!): http://cydia.pushfix.info . Enjoy never losing your jailbreak because of iTunes!

It’s January 2007 and Steve Jobs has just totally sold me on .Mac (pronounced dot-mac, for those who don’t remember). It had website building tools, OS integrated cloud storage in the form of iDisk, cool @mac email addresses and sex appeal.

The one thing that took some convincing was the cool $99 it cost annually. I easily overcame that obstacle and signed up, however. When left to myself, I loved it. I loved tossing things in iDisk and accessing them anywhere. I loved my contacts syncing over the air. I loved my email address. I loved it all.

A year and a half later .Mac became MobileMe and put what some saw as a neglected 90′s technology on modern crack. Everything was refreshed and they even won some awards while doing it. The year was 2008 and my vows were renewed. However, it had it’s critics.

When I told people of my in-love experience with MobileMe, I was rarely met with “Isn’t it wonderful?!” Rather, the response was something along the lines of, “You know you can get all those services for free, right?” But I never listened. The cards began falling in 2009 when a once fringe-ish practice of cloud storage began to hit the public en masse. Everyone around me was adopting cloud solutions and the solution was never MobileMe.

I had a frank discussion with my brother around this same time when I desperately tried to show him how everyone else was wrong and I was right. I showed him iCal on me.com and showed him how you can drag events around and how useful it was. I showed him contacts and how quickly everything could sync. I showed him the email client and showed him all the ways that it was better than other webmail sites. He likely wouldn’t know, but he wasn’t my intended audience… I was.

I wanted to believe so badly that Apple had nailed it. I wanted to know that my money had be well spent and that I was part of a winning platform.

But I can’t fight the truth any longer.

There really are amazing tools and solutions out there that execute every aspect of the MobileMe experience either equivalently or better. And I’ve begun the transition to these other solutions and come May when my MobileMe expires, I’ll not be renewing. Instead, these will be the tools that will be carrying me.

1) Dropbox > iDisk

Dropbox is a cloud storage solution which is free for light users, and cost effective for heavier users. It has both OS integration and a phenomenal web experience. This was the big shift in scales for me. Cloud storage is the only one of the services within the MobileMe family of tools that other companies are charging for. The $99 for MobileMe gets you 20GB, while for the same cost Dropbox will give you 50GB. This is big for me. I use cloud storage like crazy. I have many computers and a smartphone, and it is the easiest way to manage files across multiple pieces and types of hardware. That is one side of it. I also have had better success using Dropbox over MobileMe. The iDisk feature is kind of clunky. It had an extremely hard time understanding when a folder had been deleted. Anytime I would reorganize my files and rename a folder or remove a folder, I would basically have to learn to deal with duplicate folders and empty folders because iDisk would not let me delete a folder once it was created. Dropbox is much more elegant. The whole thing syncs much more quickly and accurately. Folders can be created and deleted at will and I’ve got 150% more storage for the same price. Easy decision.

2) Gmail.com > Me.com

This one is tougher. Email addresses are sacred. Particularly personal ones. I’ve given my me.com address to hundreds of contacts through the years. My college buddies use it, my non-company professional contacts use it. And there is no real way of contacting everyone who will ever email me there and tell them to use a new address. Tough. This was the last element keeping me at Apple’s MobileMe. The fact that they can hold your email address hostage for $100 bucks a year should be criminal. But, this is a bridge I’ve crossed. I’ve already gone through all my memberships and changed them all over to my gmail address. I’ve deleted the me.com outgoing mail server so that all replies are coming from my gmail address. Again, this has been the toughest part of the transition, but worth it to get a free and open email address. I’ll no longer be a slave to that annual fee to continue getting email.

3) Syncing contacts/calendars through Google > iCal

This was one of the things that I’ll just plead ignorance on. When everyone around me was saying that I could get all the MobileMe services from other providers for free, I thought they were being general, when in fact it is true literally. Apple likes to say that their services are “exchange for the rest of us.” Not true. Google uses Microsoft Exchange, literally, and Apple’s services are something that kind of look like exchange if you squint really hard and eat paint chips. As I went through the process of syncing my contacts with Google’s exchange account, I was shocked how easy it was and how fast it was. My calendars went seamlessly as well. No hiccups. No I-think-I’m-gonna-regret-this moment. Just a few minutes between my phone and computer following easy directions.

4) WordPress & Tumblr > iWeb

Software is dying. Particularly Consumer web publishing software. No matter what you need to accomplish, iWeb will cripple you and WordPress, Tumblr and the like will empower you. They are easy to set up, 100% customizable, and require absolutely no programming to use. My mom even has a few WordPress sites she uses and she fits exactly within the iWeb demographic, no offense Mom. I was a big iWeb guy for a long time and had more than a dozen sites setup, but as WordPress got better and better and with other publishing tools like Tumblr popping up, iWeb went from kind of useful to completely useless. I’ve moved on.

So there it is. I’m done! I got everything for free, sans the optional additional storage I purchased from Dropbox, and I couldn’t be happier. 2007 seems so long ago. MobileMe is a tired program and it feels liberating to no longer be tied to something so closed-up. So, 4 years and $400 later, I say peace out, MobileMe, I’ve got all you could offer and more, without you.

3DBoard works by taking advantage of the iPhone’s sensory hardware, therefore giving off a 3D effect to your SpringBoard! You can toggle the effect in the settings app of your device. 3DBoard works with all iDevices on iOS 4.0+ . Check out the link below for a demonstration video of 3DBoard by it’s creator. Note that the video was made before the tweak was released so changes could exist!

What’s so great about this tweak? Well, it adds 3D to your iPhone without the need for 3D glasses! You gotta admit, that’s pretty cool! Now, how would this tweak look combined with DeepEnd? I’m not sure, but I bet the effect would be awesome!

Now this tweak isn’t free though. It’s at a steep price of $2.99 in Cydia, but $2.99 isn’t a bad price for what it does though! You can purchase and download 3DBoard on the BigBoss repo which should already be installed in Cydia.(Remember, you must have a jailbroken device in order to install this!!)

This allows you to put any content on the device for easy transfer to another computer using your iPhone!

USB Drive allows you to use however much you want of your device’s capacity to create “partitions” in the app for storing content on. You can pretty much make as many partitions as you want, but it’s not recommended due to the fact that it might make your device slow and you don’t want to use too much of your device’s capacity. It has 3 different modes to offer: “Default” mode, “Drive Only” mode (which allows the driver only) and lastly “Drive + iTunes” (which allows you to use the driver and iTunes on your computer). It has been reported that the “Drive + iTunes” mode might make your iTunes not work properly but it’s only temporary. It is also recommended to read the documentation about the modes yourself.

You can get USB Drive yourself for free by adding the following repo to your sources in Cydia (Remeber, your device must be jailbroken!!):

DeepEnd is a cool little jailbreak tweak which adds a 3D effect to your iPhone 4′s homescreen wallpaper. DeepEnd was coded by well known developer Ryan Petri.

DeepEnd works by using your iPhone 4′s gyroscope to change your iPhone’s screen orientation based on the angle you hold your device, creating a 3D effect to your homescreen wallpaper! Remember, you will need a jailbroken iPhone 4 or other supported iDevice in order to install this!!

You may be asking, “What’s the big deal about this tweak?” Well, it makes a 3D effect on your homescreen wallpaper (which, in my opinion, is pretty cool) and….. it’s free! Download it in Cydia by adding the following repo to your sources: http://rpetri.ch/repo/

We’ll be stress testing our live blogging system (it’s just CoverItLive) this Wednesday. Full details after the break!

While we don’t expect to receive thousands of people on our website at once, we want to make sure that everything will work properly when we actually start to live blog certain events.

This Wednesday at 4:00pm Mountain Time (6:00pm Eastern, 5:00pm Central, 3:00pm Pacific), we want as many people to come to the site as possible to really see how everything will stack up. We’ll also be testing CoverItLive to make sure that posting updates (text and images) will be fast and efficient.

HERE is the link for you to bookmark. It’ll just be this post, but we’ll edit it so that it includes the live blogging features.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Well, if you get either the Scosche FlipSync Micro/Mini or the FlipSync iDevice, then you’ll never leave it behind! May seem a bit pricey, but you’ll never forget a cable since you’ll have this on your keychain everywhere you go.

6. Nanodots – $29.99+

They may be a bit pricey, but some people have been able to make some really cool stuff with them.

7. Call of Duty: Black Ops – $59.99

We will be attending the 2011 International CES convention in Las Vegas, NV. We have our press pass, and will be bringing as much content from CES as possible (videos, blog posts, interviews, etc). More information after the break!

Time to switch over to “I” from “we” . I’ll be arriving sometime on the 3rd and will be getting things sorted out, and will be leaving on the 10th.

At the moment, everything is a one-man operation. I plan on getting lots and lots of videos, photos, and blog posts up as much as possible. This is impossible to do with just one person, so here’s where some of you might help!

I’d like to get GBTech to collaborate with other sites (or individuals). So, if you happen to be attending CES in January, lets team up to provide as much content for our sites as possible! If you’re interested, send us a message on our CES 2011 page.

Also, if you’d like to just meet up and say “hi”, let me know by sending a message on our CES 2011 page.

ALSO! We’ll be doing LOTS of live blogging!

If you have any sort of CES 2011 related questions, fill out the form on our CES 2011 page.

It’s going to be a fun and hectic week.

If that doesn’t work, try changing it to 56, or add one to the end number. We’ve had lots and lots of visitors and have lots of regular readers. It’s been an eventful and very educational one year. Lots of changes have happened since the launch, and we’ve had a lot of fun ever since. More GBTech information after the break!

Since our initial launch, we’ve received nearly 1 million unique visitors and nearly 2,000,000 page views! Want to see something funny? Check this out: http://bit.ly/RCzHM That’s what we used to get MONTHLY. We’re getting exactly that daily (if not more)! Things have really changed since the launch. We’ve gone through roughly 3 different site designs, forums, no forums, etc. Things have finally changed for the better.

Panorama is a nice little paid tweak from Cydia, so you need a jailbroken device for this.

What Panorama does is give you the ability to have panoramic Homescreen wallpaper, ie: the wallpaper will scroll along as you move through pages (kind of like the Zune HD).

The scroll sensitivity can be set as desired, so you can have the wallpaper move significantly or just a bit when you flick through your homescreen icons. Panorama has other nice features like changing the transparency of the dock, icons and icon labels, etc…
This tweak has no icon. You can find it in the Settings.app.

To make it work, you need a wallpaper image of size 2MB or greater (so that it spreads over a few Homescreen pages). I use google images and click option ‘Larger than..2MB’ on the left. Save the image you like to photo library on your device.

Now go to Settings.app, scroll down to Panorama and tap Photo library to choose your wallpaper (again, larger than 2MP). Also make sure Enabled is ON.

There you have it. A wallaper that moves as you move through pages!

Personally, I hate having to deal with iTunes every time I want to add a song or two to my iPhone. Specially when I’m not near my macbook. And I’m sure many of you always look around for ways to stream or listen to songs you don’t already have on your iDevice. Here are a few ways I found very useful to do so.

1- Internet radio, like Pandora. The problem with this app (or similar apps) is that you can’t save (download) the songs you stream, and therefore can’t play them when you’re out of 3G or wifi range. I usually use Pandora only to introduce me to new songs.

The next 2 methods require a jailbroken device.

2- Download the song you want!
First you need to install iFile via cydia, that’s if you don’t already have it. Then you need Safari Download Manager from cydia as well. It lets you download all kinds of file types right from Safari on your device. They’re a few dollars altogether but worth every single penny!
Now you’re ready! All you have to do is go to a site like 4shared (or other) in Safari on you device, search for a song and download it! Now you always have it on your device in iFile (/var/Mobile/Media/Downloads).

3- This one’s my favorite. Use Yourtube (or Yourtube2 for iOS4), paid tweak through cydia. This tweak allows you download videos in the Youtube.app on your device.

But that’s not it! The most amazing feature about it is that it lets you export/add these downloaded videos to your iPod Video Library (Music Player app). This feature is expected to come soon to Safari and Mail!
See screenshots below to get a feel of it.

Now you can create playlists on your iDevice’s native music player that contain songs you already have in your Library AND [music] videos you just downloaded on the go.

About a week ago, I posted this post about our expansion of writers here at Gumball Tech. We’ve had a very good turnout of submissions (there were 25 submissions), and I’m pleased to announced that the 5 new writers have been chosen. There will be a lot of new content from now on. More information after the break.

The 5 writers have already been notified, and they are: Shahm, Heather, Ryan, Jason, and Ben. Congratulations! We are all looking forward to the new content that you have to offer. Below is a little bit of information about each of them. It’s also available on our new Staff page.

Ben

As a recent convert from PC to Mac, I wanted to take advantage of my new computer. I had a YouTube account, so I started subscribing to tech reviewers. I actually stumbled upon the Gumball Tech YouTube channel, which was one of the first subscriptions I had. I wanted to try my hand at tech videos, so I started my own channel. This led to me to getting into Twitter, and also getting interested in posting on a website. Toady, I’m happy to have my own website, as well as being a writer for Gumball Tech. I hope some of this takes me somewhere in the future. Feel free to follow me on Twitter @aelandT3.

Ryan

Hi! I’m Ryan. I’m a 16 year old high school junior, where I am also taking some undergrad courses at George Mason University. I’m a big Apple fan, as well as a technology lover as a whole. You can follow me on Twitter @ryanseitz.

Heather

Hi there, I’m Heather! I’m a 22 year old female with a passion for all things tech. I switched from PC to Mac in 2008, and adore the Android mobile OS (currently on a Captivate). I’m a born and raised Texan. Currently I am a tech/secretary at a software development company, and I am obsessed with staying on top of my RSS feeds. In my spare time I enjoy ripping apart iPods, blogging, making jewelry, and spending time with family. Feel free to follow me onTwitter @ZylearCreations.

Shahm

Hey all. I’m Shahm aka rayyes, recent Civil Engineering graduate who loves everything tech. To fill my time, I work while studying for my masters, and now I start writing for Gumball Tech . Hopefully, you’ll see a lot of posts by me about iphone/ipod mods, themes and how-to’s.

Jason

Hello everyone, my name is Jason Braning, I am 18 and I live in Denver, Colorado. I work a lot on computers (mostly Apple but a lot of PC’s too). I do a lot of work for different types of websites and saw an opening for Gumball Tech and was interested in a writing position. So here i am!!

We also have a few people who have been with us for a while, and occasionally write up posts.

Our Cydia repo has had a nice long run. It has had over 50,000 package downloads since our very first package was posted on November 20, 2009.It turns out that our Cydia repo is utilizing an excessive amount of RAM and CPU on our shared server. Therefore, we’ll have to close the Cydia repo, at least until we can get a dedicated server, which won’t be happening for a long time. We aren’t getting enough ad revenue to pay for a dedicated server (monthly). We’d have to pay 12x more than we pay now.

If you’d still like to access our files, click here for a listing of what we have. To download the .DEB file, click here, for which you can install manually onto your device.

A security expert once stated “poor security can be worse than no security”, and this unfortunately is far too evident in today’s society where information and personal documents flow more freely than fresh water. Every day in the news, there’s several articles regarding hackers stealing confidential information or crackers breaking into random Facebook accounts, and some of us have even experienced this breach of privacy first hand. Just this month Googles, website was hacked, President Obama’s Facebook account was cracked and now Afgan terriorist are reported to be using the Iphone as a means to access confidental information. We’re constantly under the attack, and sadly, most end users settle into a state of false security once they have a few basic tools of protection (if any).

Most users that I’ve encountered have the following: a free virus scanner such as AVG or Avast, some even go as far as to purchase one, maybe Norton, and a built-in firewall provided by their local Internet service provider. The more computer savvy users actually keep the antivirus up-to-date, run periodic scans and they’ve even gone as far as to change the default password on the router/firewall and encrypt their wireless network. In sum, these users have done exactly what they should, and so they assume they’re safe from the big bad internet. Unfortunately, as I will explain, this is far from the truth.

Protecting your home network is vital but it’s still only a small step on the ladder to security. There’s still the transmission of the data to consider and the end point. If either one of these are compromised, then so is your data. But there’s good news. Protecting your information on the web is almost as easy as protecting your home network. With a few of basic steps, you can greatly improve your security.

The first step is to try not to use insecure access points, such as an airport or an internet café. If you often travel and need access to the internet 24-7, consider purchasing a secure air card from Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint; these cards automatically encrypt your data as it’s transmitted over the Internet preventing any prying eyes. If you must use an insecure access point, encrypt your own data. Many email clients offer this feature with very little hassle. If you need your Internet traffic protected, considers a proxy server.

Step two is to only send and receive data from a secure source. Phishers trying to break into your personal accounts, will often create fake websites that look similar to the real thing. An easy way to tell the difference is by looking at the address bar in your browser. If you’re trying to visit Citibank.com and the URL reads Cltiank.com, be skeptical and close the website. Open up a new browser and type in the URL again.

Last but not least, research a business before you send them your personal information. If someone contacts you for personal information, get their name, the name of the business, and do a little research. With the technology available to us today, it takes only 5 minutes and a Google search to get all the information you need.

In summary, protect your network with easy to configure tools such as virus scanners and a firewall, monitor the transmission of your data, make sure it’s on a secure channel, and last but not least, know who you’re giving your private information to. If you follow these simple little steps the Internet shouldn’t be that bad.

In beta 2 and beta 3 of the iPhone SDK 3.2.2, Apple removed the still-camera feature. It’s really simple to get back. But what does this mean? Well, there may eventually be a built-in camera to the iPad.

The iPad has 3G capabilities. I enabled the Data Roaming setting, so this post will tell you how to do that.

For the still-camera, open up the iPadSimulator.plist file located in /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneSimulator.platform/Developer/SDKs/iPhoneSimulator3.2.sdk/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/. Add a new boolean value called “still-camera”, and set it to true. You’ll probably need to save-as this file to your desktop, then drag it into the SpringBoard.app window. You’ll need to enter your password to do so. Leave this file open if you want to enable the Data Roaming setting.

To enable the Data Roaming setting, you’ll first need to follow this guide here that tells you how to access some hidden settings in the Settings app.

Next, go back to the iPadSimulator.plist file. Add a new boolean value called “cellular-data”, and set it to true. You’ll probably need to save-as this file to your desktop, then drag it into the SpringBoard.app window. You’ll need to enter your password to do so.

Open up the iPad Simulator, and check out the Contacts app (for the still-camera), or open the Settings app to see the Data Roaming option.

For this to work, you must reboot after installation. You also have to do the “Free Memory” command in SBSettings for it to fully work. Your device may become unresponsive for about 45 seconds during this time. This should be expected, so dont’ panic.
