Sensory Substitution Device Turns Images Into Sound For Blind People

Remember that scene in DareDevil where he hits a metal wall and starts to see his surroundings based on the sounds that echo off everything? Well that may actually become a reality for the visually impaired relatively soon thanks to a new piece of wearable technology!

Originally reported on Cerebral Cortex and then picked up on io9, science has made another leap in wearable technology that can this time help blind people to see! Using a camera this “Sensory Substitution Device” can turn you into a living breathing Dare Devil by gathering in visual data and translating it into sound! Apparently with some practice blind users are even gaining the ability to read and identify complex shapes and surroundings by listening to the information contained in these “soundscapes.”

Google X, Google’s secret think tank, has been lining their stables with electronic engineers who specialize in wearable computers, including the now infamous wearables tech PhD Richard DuVaul who left Apple to join Google. Not content to merely pace Apple’s innovation with computerized wrist watches Google has been prototyping futuristic glasses with a screen in one eyepiece, and a front facing camera to gathering location information.

Report: Apple to announce “GarageBand for E-books”!

Apple is set to have a media event on Thursday in which they will focus on Education.  ArsTechnica has claimed that Apple will release a “GarageBand” specifically for E-Books. Apple has already sent out invitations for the event and has also been reportedly working with McGraw-Hill since June.
